The Aerospace and Defense Product Lifecycle Management Action Group sponsored a team of domain experts to evaluate current data interoperability technologies in support of Model-Based Systems Engineering. The objective converged towards data architecture models created during the conceptual design phase. Based on this objective, the team explored the feasibility of exchanging digital models, instead of documents, between the aerospace Original Equipment Manufacturing companies and their suppliers. The focus of this presentation is aerospace and the alternatives for exchanging digitally defined system architecture models as a standard business practice. It will look at the investigation process, the applicable Use Cases, the options explored, results obtained, issues identified, and potential solutions.

One of the key business challenges in the aerospace and defense industry is achieving OEM and supply chain collaboration through bi-directional exchange of technical data packages via digital tools and model-based processes. To address this challenge, the Aerospace and Defense Product Lifecycle Management Action Group (AD PAG) sponsored a project team of domain experts from the AD PAG member companies to evaluate current data interoperability standards, enabling a Model-Based Definition (MBD) set of concepts, processes, and tools that allow the creation of a semantically (computer interpretable) annotated 3D product definition that is linked to a Bill of Materials (BOM) system. This presentation will report out the AD PAG project team’s position on critical information requirements in support of four key use cases. It will also cover the project team’s next step in implementation and standards assessment.

The exchange of Product Data Management (PDM) data between disparate PDM solutions, including Computer-Aided Design and Bill of Materials data, presents a challenge within the Aerospace & Defense industry. The exchange requires independent and exclusive processes, each unique and complicated to support the long-term future of collaboration between Original Equipment Manufacturers and suppliers. Improving the efficiency of collaboration across the product lifecycle in development, production, and maintenance creates opportunities to meet product cost targets. This presentation offers a new desired state for that collaboration process where multiple partners collaborate on projects in a common workspace.

This presentation will present and discuss the process, test cases, and results of the Aerospace & Defense PLM Action Group’s Multi-view BOM Solution Evaluation Benchmarks Report, released on 16 July 2020. The report documents the definition of test cases that encapsulate requirements for Multi-view BOM management within an aerospace OEM, and the findings and conclusions from evaluating the capability of commercially available PLM software to fulfill those requirements. The report concludes that the test cases are valid and that commercial technology has matured to a level where the implementation of Multi-view BOM management within an aerospace OEM is a practical possibility, albeit with caveats. The results were consolidated, analyzed, and configured to describe the industry’s state for aerospace specific requirements, but reported results were generalized to mask specific solution performance. The discussion will conclude with recommendations for industry action and future solution evaluation benchmarks.

Most Aerospace and Defense (A&D) companies have developed heavily customized PLM solutions for design and manufacturing because current commercial PLM solutions do not offer complete and efficient out-of-the-box capability for managing accountability between Bill of Materials (BOM) structures. Ten airframe and propulsion OEMs, all members of the A&D PLM Action Group, along with five invited Tier 1 suppliers jointly sponsored and staffed a Multi-view BOM project to reduce the pain associated with managing and reusing data in long lifecycle products by defining and adopting industry standards and best practices, thereby avoiding PLM solution customizations. This presentation will show how the team reached a consensus to publish the Multi-view BOM Position Paper and review the paper’s main conclusions and requirements concerning Engineering BOM to Manufacturing BOM restructuring, effectivity management, and collaboration with suppliers.

Members of an A&D multi-company project team are defining the minimum data content in MBD-type design required to meet manufacture, inspection, and regulatory certification requirements. The Group has focused on ISO 10303-242 (STEP AP242), ISO 14306 (JT), and ISO 32000/14739 (PRC for 3D PDF), and commercial translation tools that support data exchange and interoperability requirements for existing MBD design processes. This presentation will describe the status of their work, and their plan to present detailed requirements, promote adoption, and achieve compliance within the PLM ecosystem.

Since the start of 2017 the A&D PLM Action Group’s Multi-view BOM project team has been working to produce an understandable set of common high-level requirements for managing the multi-view BOM in PLM solutions.This presentation will describe the operating model that has been put in place and the topics identified by the team that need to be addressed.

The A&D PLM Action Group has taken steps to examine the digital thread and explore the art of the possible for certifying commercial aircraft designs in an industry consistent manner. This presentation will examine the elements of the digital thread and the group’s thoughts on a consistent approach to certification relevant data.

This presentation offers a high level review of objectives, requirements, and a road map for definition and implementation of a “minimum digital thread.” It will cover reaching agreement on the minimum content required in full 3D model-based definition and engineering bill of material definition; agreeing on a set of standards for representation of this information; communicating objectives and requirements to solution providers for their review and comment; and reaching closure on a joint plan of action.

This presentation will describe two classic approaches dating back to the 80’s: the Airbus concept of a single BoM and the Boeing concept of dual-BoMs (engineering BOM and manufacturing BOM). The presentation will include use cases and will consider the pros and cons of each concept. A review of the initial results will be shared.

Today, in industries such as aerospace and automotive, there are many examples of nearly complete digital representation through all stages of the product lifecycle, yet pain points in the information flow persist. One of those pain points is the flow of product information through the design chain during product development. This presentation will review two years of research to characterize the global design collaboration space, and then identify the points of greatest opportunity for remediation and the root causes to be addressed within that space.

Managing the risks associated with PLM solution and data obsolescence within A&D companies is a large, growing problem. To address this, the A&D PLM Action Group assigned a cross-industry team to identify the causes and potential remedies. This presentation will provide a high level review of the obsolescence research and the resulting requirements.

In this presentation, CIMdata reports on recent research identifying the major causal factors driving the negative consequences of technology obsolescence and mitigation methods for countering their impact. Specific proactive strategies for user companies and for solution providers will be presented and discussed.
