CIMdata Releases PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry Report

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, March 25, 2003 — PLM Consulting and research firm CIMdata today announced the release of a new report called PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry. This report describes the evolution of the Product Data Management (PDM) market of the 1980's and early 1990's to the comprehensive Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) market of today. It includes a growth revenue history of the collaborative Product Definition Management (cPDm) segment of the PLM market during this evolution.

Commenting on the PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry report, Ken Amann, CIMdata Director of Research said, “The Report draws its strength from CIMdata's long and intimate involvement with the PLM industry throughout its history. It provides insight into how and why PLM has evolved into the mission-critical enterprise solution that it is today.” He added that, “While the Report does not project future revenues, it provides a coherent record of the beginnings and growth of PLM, and examines the issues that triggered initial corporate investments in the industry and shaped its growth.”

Mr. Amann said that the PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry report is valuable to both industrial companies who are investing or planning to invest in PLM solutions and to the suppliers who provide these solutions. “Industrial companies will gain insight into the importance of PLM to their organizations and gain an understanding of how PLM has evolved into broad enterprise level solutions. They will also learn about the industries that have made the most significant investments in PLM, and as a result have achieved the broadest benefits.”

According to Mr. Amann, “the PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry report provides the suppliers of PLM solutions a better understanding of how the PLM market has grown by industry and geography, which we believe will help them plan their marketing program and development strategies more effectively.”

The PDM to PLM: Growth of an Industry report is available from CIMdata for $195.

CIMdata defines PLM as a strategic business approach that applies a consistent set of business solutions in support of the collaborative creation, management, dissemination, and use of product definition information across the extended enterprise from concept to end-of-life, integrating people, processes, business systems, and information. PLM forms the digital product and intellectual asset information backbone of a company and its extended enterprise. PLM is composed of multiple elements including: foundation technologies and standards, information authoring and analysis tools, core functions, functional applications, and business solutions built on the other. A more detailed definition of PLM is found on the CIMdata website at www.cimdata.com/index.htm.
