When designers carefully work with all their creativeness on assigned tasks, realize their designs as 3D models through the wide range of functions available in CAD software, do their best to bring the work to perfection, and work constantly at improving themselves, why can designers not be considered creators, and CAD as art? As the developer and integrator of professional CAD/AEC/PLM solutions, ASCON Group is pleased to again announce the annual KOMPAS-3D Modeling Contest 2014. KOMPAS-3D is the high performance, cost effective, easy to learn software solution for mechanical design. Held annually, the modeling contest showcases the abilities of individuals and design firms using KOMPAS-3D to model a wide variety of 3D and 2D designs. This year is special for the company as it celebrates two significant anniversaries: ASCON Group established 25 years ago KOMPAS-3D software reaches 15 years of development From now and until of June 1, 2014 all current and future ASCON customers

Presentation will offer a vision for Model-Based Systems Engineering in support of systems engineering ANN ARBOR, Michigan, 4 March 2014—CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm announces that Dr. Martin Eigner, an authority on systems engineering, will make a presentation at CIMdata’s upcoming European workshop, Bridging the Requirements Gap with Model-Based Systems Engineering, which will take place in Bad Homburg, Germany on 9 April, 2014. Dr. Eigner’s presentation, “From Documents to Models: The Vision for Model-Based Systems Engineering,” will detail the case for using shared digital models to capture requirements and knowledge to enable collaboration and concurrent engineering, rather than relying on requirements documents that do not communicate well between organizations, and do not relate to design elements. Examples of why this is critical to establishing a systems concept in organizations’ product development processes will be presented. How model-based systems engineering supports and enables systems engineering concepts throughout

Commodity Futures

Over a good part of the last decade there has been discussion about computer-aided design (CAD) tools becoming a commodity. In some respects, you could make that argument as the lines between high end tools, like CATIA, Creo, and NX and “mid-range” tools like Inventor, Solid Edge, and SolidWorks, have become blurred. (Before anyone gets excited, these tools were listed in alphabetical order, and only represent part of these large markets. In our annual PLM Market Analysis Reports we refer to these segments as MCAD-MD, for multi-discipline, to reflect the broad portfolio of configurable options in the high end tools, and MCAD-DF, for design-focused.) In looking at the PLM market, I have often applied the work of Clayton Christensen of Harvard (built on the shoulders of some researchers who heavily influenced me in past professional lives) to try to understand some of the dynamics. In any given product category, there is

Altair has announced that it has made its computer aided engineering (CAE) software suite, HyperWorks®, freely available to all early stage researchers of the Aerospace Multidisciplinary Enabling Design Optimisation Marie Curie Initial Training Network (AMEDEO ITN) project. The move grants AMEDEO ITN fellows access to industry leading simulation tools to support research into the development of the next generation of environmentally-friendly aircraft. The licenses arranged by AMEDEO ITN Principal Investigator, Tim Surry of Altair ProductDesign UK, are to be remotely accessed through Altair’s new cloud-managed licensing system, Hosted HyperWorks Units (HHWU). Use of HHWU eliminates the IT burden of maintaining server-based software licenses and is ideal for the AMEDEO ITN project, which involves geographically dispersed industry and university partners across Europe. HHWU allows members of the AMEDEO ITN early-stage research team to work remotely and access the HyperWorks applications on-demand. "Altair is excited to be a consortium partner with AMEDEO,” said Tim
