Dr. Arthur Fairfull has specialized in the development, implementation, and marketing of materials information systems for over 30 years. Prior to Granta Design, he held several data management-related positions at MSC Software, latterly as Director in Simulation Data Management. Joining Granta in 2006, he is now Senior Consultant advising Granta's Materials Strategy and PLM Integration initiatives – delivering new software applications that apply materials data in the context of wider engineering or business decisions. Arthur has a BSc in mechanical engineering and a PhD in materials science.
The Digital Thread – Weaving a Materials Strategy for PLM
The digital thread is a fundamental concept in achieving digitalization of product lifecycle processes – enabling a connected data flow, an integrated view spanning multiple functional perspectives, and full traceability. The digital thread is often associated with managing and tracking the ubiquitous “Bill of Materials” – but how much do today’s systems really understand about materials, and the breadth of information and functionality required to represent them digitally? This talk will summarize the critical business impacts of materials, explore why the digitalization of materials information has lagged behind other disciplines, and summarize the approach and benefits of best practice – enabling an enterprise materials strategy for PLM.
