Connectivity has enabled the development of business information, peer-to-peer, and even social networks. As the internet has matured, the barriers to collaborating on-line have lowered. This phenomenon has given rise to major movements in crowdsourcing (Wikipedia) and open sourcing (Linux). GE’s FirstBuild is an innovation incubator that has embraced transparency and openness in hardware product innovation through a process called co-creation. By teaming both virtually and locally with inventors, hackers, and tinkerers, FirstBuild is developing the next generation of home appliances. The model established at FirstBuild represents a novel and effective approach at solving the problems targeted by lean product development.

Moderated by: Dr. Ken Versprille, Executive Consultant and Practice Manager, Social Product Development & Collaboration, CIMdata [Bio]
Collaboration is essential and happens at every stage of innovation. Better ideas are created if insights from diverse sources are combined. Problems are solved faster if internal and external experts outside of the product teams are involved, and effective collaboration across the supply chain scales up. While open sharing builds trust and accelerates the transfer of necessary information and knowledge across seams, there is often concern about IP ownership and contamination, especially for external collaboration. In this panel discussion we will explore these concerns and learn about strategies and approaches that our panelists have found effective in remedying these concerns.

PLM and New Manufacturing in a Networked World
The dependence on networks in our lives is growing every day and is not just limited to communication. This presentation will consider the transformative influence that networks are having on the way we live, work, and conduct business. Increasingly manufacturing companies are leveraging market, design, engineering, and facilities located around the globe. The networking paradigm will apply to manufacturing companies and will be transformative. The growing specialization in specific manufacturing verticals will create a new type of manufacturing company, one that is capable of leveraging networks, allowing them to optimize performance, improve collaboration, and reduce cost. Intelligent PLM software with a networked mind can provide a competitive power to future manufacturing.

Dr. Svetlana Dimovski, Senior Manager for Innovation Excellence, BASF [Bio]
How do large established companies continuously innovate, and how do they preserve tradition while reinventing the way they connect to the world? This year BASF is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a global co-creation initiative. This presentation will deliver insights on how to seed, grow, and unleash innovation to create a global co-creation movement in a large organization by leading from multiple positions. The talk will highlight key insights in BASF's journey to innovation excellence, such as: navigating complexity - leading innovation in an organizational matrix, creating space for everyone to experiment and contribute, synchronicity, alignment, and getting to a tipping point, beyond the tipping point - creating flow and innovation movement, creating a Global Open Innovation Community, and aligning open innovation with communication and BASF's 150th anniversary.
  • 1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. | Panel Discussion: What Will it Take for PLM to Become a Business Platform for Innovation?
Moderated by: Dr. Ken Versprille, Executive Consultant and Practice Manager, Social Product Development & Collaboration, CIMdata [Bio]
The Enterprise Innovation Management market space is comprised of many software and service providers who offer innovation strategies and capabilities using quite different approaches, thought leadership, and value messaging. With the increased importance of innovation to develop smart connected products, traditional PLM providers now speak about the benefits of their solutions for innovation and innovation management as a simple, natural extension of their PLM footprint. However, their communication is colliding with messaging from the ecosystem that has grown around Open Innovation. In addition, new approaches such as crowdsourcing and co-creation have become so commonplace that they challenge the traditional definition and expectations of PLM. This panel will introduce a common innovation system framework and terminology and discuss how various solution approaches that are available fit into this framework, including their benefits and implementation challenges, and strategies to overcome them.
    – Peter von Dyck, CEO, e-Zassi [Bio]
    – Carrie Nauyalis, NPD Solutions Evangelist, Planview [Bio]
    – Bill Lewis, Director of Marketing for Teamcenter, Siemens PLM Software [Bio]
    – Huub Rutten, Vice President of Product Research and Design, Sopheon [Bio]
  • 2:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. | Networking Break
  • 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Interactive Session: What are most pressing innovation challenges and opportunities in this era of smart and connected products?
Dr. Suna Polat, Director, Collaborative Innovation & Social Product Development Consulting, CIMdata [Bio]
In this session, we will discuss critical challenges and opportunities for innovation, and ideate on effective strategies, approaches and tools to overcome the challenges, or maximize opportunities. We will also discuss how PLM as a platform for innovation needs to evolve.
