This collective intelligence rests upon the underlying network of trusting relationships between stakeholders that enable the dialogues fundamental to the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. In this presentation you will learn about the tools and methods that visualize and characterize these networks, enabling leadership to take actions and thus, optimizing innovation across the product lifecycle.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. | Design Thinking in Medical Device Innovation
Mary Beth Privitera, Director, Medical Device Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, University of Cincinnati [Bio]
Designing medical devices with a focus on human factors is critical to addressing the needs of medical professionals in their work environment. In this presentation attendees will learn how the use of observational research, otherwise known as contextual inquiry, is increasing in the process of medical device design, leading to more innovative solutions for medical professionals. This presentation will use case studies and focused research to demonstrate the differences in design approach (user centered v. collaborative design), current opinions found in industry (nationally as well as internationally), best practices, and the practical challenges of involving users in the front end of the design process. It will conclude with a common set of principles, such as: contextual inquiry is the foundation upon which the collaborative relationship is built; trade-off decisions are a must in order to expedite development, and that users can and want to be tapped when identifying the optimum design.

We are in a new phase of technological evolution that is driving a new age of innovation. Soon every part of our lives will be connected to the internet. This is the era of the Internet of Everything - what Steve Case, the co-founder of AOL, calls “the third wave of the internet” in his recent book titled “The Third Wave – An Entrepreneurs View of the Future." Steve says the first wave was about building the internet and the second wave was about apps and the mobile revolution. In the third wave, he predicts that disruption of established industries and companies will be a given. In this panel discussion we will further explore this topic from the point of view of industrial companies and the solution providers.
  • 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Concluding Remarks
