PLM Road Map in collaboration with PDT Europe, offers two unique events that will be of interest to the global PLM industry.

PLM Road Map 2017 in collaboration with PDT Europe, is the must-attend event for PLM industry executives and PLM practitioners globally—providing independent education and a collaborative networking environment where ideas, trends, experiences, and relationships critical to the industry germinate and take root. The theme for this year's conference is “Digitalization: The Next Step in PLM’s Evolution.”

Over the last several years, the IT world has dramatically changed due to several strong influences, namely SMAC (social, mobile, analytics and cloud), and now IoT (internet of things). The next big thing seems to be digitalization, which leverages strategies and solutions addressing the SMAC and IoT trends to help companies fundamentally transform their businesses. According to a recent survey, top-performing businesses are currently spending 34% of their IT budget on digital transformation, with 44% planned in 2018.

Digitalization, like any “next big thing”, carries with it a heavy load of hype and confusion. To clear some of the fog, let’s begin with a definition offered by Gartner, Inc.: “Digitalization is the use of digital technologies to change a business model and provide new revenue and value-producing opportunities; it is the process of moving to a digital business.”

In many ways, we in the PLM community were here first. From digitization (i.e., the process of changing from analog to digital form) of the 70s and 80s to the digital thread (i.e., digital product definition flowing from product design into manufacturing and then into service) of the present day, we in the PLM community have built the platform for the rising digitalization wave.

It may be asserted correctly that digitalization is the next step in the evolution of PLM. However, digitalization goes beyond PLM, exploiting the company’s PLM resources in a broader business context. In this new context, PLM is central, but to achieve these new possibilities the PLM resources must evolve to be more accessible, understandable and flexible to serve a broader range of business uses.

CIMdata’s PLM Road Map™ 2017 brings together the perspectives of thought leaders within automotive, aerospace & defense, and other industries who are evolving their company’s PLM solutions to support new business opportunities and value propositions by simplifying, standardizing and providing multi-faceted views into their PLM information repositories.
