On the Journey to Systemic Innovation

Written by

InnovateAs Innovation Maturity Improves Processes and Tools Become More Critical

A CIMdata survey among industrial clients and solution providers revealed, and perhaps confirmed, what we all intuitively know: We need to adjust our plans as our innovation maturity improves, focusing on different limiting factors as we go from ad-hoc innovation towards systemic innovation.

In the survey we asked participants what they thought about the stage of their company’s innovation maturity and the factors that enable or limit innovation. The survey was conducted at the end of two different CIMdata education webinars, one recently and the other about eight months ago. Combined responses revealed a consistent pattern, as shown in the figure below.

During the ad-hoc stage of innovation the most limiting factor is culture. As innovation maturity improves culture becomes less of an issue. Instead the processes and tools that enable innovation emerge as the limiting factors. However, this does not mean that culture is less important as innovation maturity improves. Culture along with “leadership that gives priority to innovation” maintains its top enabling status across all stages of innovation maturity.

The survey results also point to the importance of insights from recent qualitative research conducted by CIMdata on Enterprise Innovation Management Solutions (EIM). Through this research we offered a classification of digital solutions for innovation, and proposed a framework as to how these solutions fit together.

Our premise is that in this new age of connected and smart products and a globally networked economy, even the most innovative enterprises have to reevaluate their approach to innovation. Many are aware that they are suffering from inefficiencies in their innovation processes due to disjointed processes and tools they have adopted over the years. At the same time, they seem to be slower to invest in new Enterprise Innovation Management solutions. This may work against them if they want to maintain their leading positions.

I will talk about innovation trends, challenges, and solutions at a number of upcoming events and look forward to your participation.
