Apparel manufacturing hasn’t been addressed in the US for 40+ years. The significant disrupting factor that hastened apparel manufacturing’s precipitous decline is outsourcing, resulting in 1,000,000 jobs lost and strategic business lock-in, the inability to innovate. Today, 98% of the apparel is imported into the US every year. The apparel industry has been attempting to re-engineer their business models over the past few years, a recognition of the consumer’s new market leverage. A business model has been defined and embraced: "sustainable fast fashion", a market differentiation model, defined by retailers and fashion experts, but very difficult to implement without fundamentally restructuring supply.
