Delcam Invests In New Thai Joint Venture
UK CADCAM developer Delcam plc has made a significant investment in its Bangkok-based reseller, Delcam Thailand, to create a new joint venture in association with the local management, Managing Director Buranang Suksamitti and General Manager Manadanee Suksamitti. This investment will enable the company to expand its training and other support operations much more rapidly to meet the growing needs of local customers for the Power Solution design and manufacturing software.
The joint venture was formally launched at the latest meeting of Delcam's Thailand User Group, which took place in Bangkok on the 18th May. More than 100 users attended the meeting to see the new features in Delcam's Power Solution software and to hear about the latest developments in best practices in the mould tool and die industries. Keynote speaker at the event was Roger Onions, President of the UK GTMA, whose paper covered "Latest Technology and Processes in Mould and Die Design and Manufacture".
The Thai economy has expanded rapidly in recent years, with the stable political environment attracting most of the large automotive manufacturers from Japan, North America and Europe to set up component manufacturing and vehicle assembly operations in the country. International manufacturers of electrical appliances and footwear have also invested heavily in Thailand.
These investments have prompted strong growth amongst local manufacturing companies. They are now investing in CADCAM systems to enable them to meet their international customers' demands for shorter lead times and higher quality and consistency. The high level of interest can be seen from the fact that Delcam Thailand's sales grew by more than 27% during 2003.
Delcam Thailand is also working with the Thai government on its plans to introduce technology into the country's more traditional industries such as jewelry and woodcarving. The company is involved in a number of regional schemes under the OTOP (One Tambon One Product) initiative to help local craftsmen enjoy the benefits of computer-aided manufacturing technology.
Commenting on the decision to invest in the country, Delcam's Asian Business Development Director Tim Mitchell said, "Thailand has shown remarkable growth in recent years. Even so, its political stability and its improving infrastructure mean that even faster increases could easily be seen in the future. By making this investment in our existing reseller, we have allowed our customers in the region to maintain their established relationships with the experienced local staff, while also benefiting from better training and support services."
