Opinion Poll

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The results for the last opinion poll are:

23% of respondents continue to execute at least half of their design work in 2D. This would not be surprising if the responses were representative of global practice. We know that a great deal of design on a worldwide basis is still being done using 2D drawings (note that 2D design can be quite appropriate for certain situations such as basic turned parts). The interesting factor in this survey is that almost one-third of respondents report that they do ALL of their design in 3D. This indicates that many organizations are abandoning 2D altogether. We can only assume that these are companies that design products at the higher end of the product complexity scale.
A follow-on question is to understand how many companies continue to use drawings to communicate their design work to manufacturing and to their partners. We will pose this question in a future poll.
NOTE: The results of these polls are anecdotal, not scientific.
