Solid EdgeŽ Version 16 From UGS Delivers New 'Zero D' Approach to Top-Down Design

UGS announced Solid EdgeŽ Version 16-its 3D computer- aided design (CAD) system for the mainstream PLM market-will be delivered with an innovative new "Zero D" approach to machine layout that starts by defining product structure before any geometry is committed to paper.

This "Zero D" approach to design allows users to conceptualize their designs top down, in a methodical way, then incorporating new 2D sketch elements, existing 2D drawings or 3D parts and associating them with the virtual product structure to develop a complete machine layout. Layouts may then be partitioned and distributed to multiple designers for 3D detailing, all while maintaining their associative links to the original layout. This hybrid process helps conceptualize assembly structures from scratch, while establishing relationships on the fly to optimize the design process and reduce time to market.

"With Solid Edge 2D/3D hybrid design, designers use the best tool for the job as required," said Dan Staples, director of the Solid Edge business unit of UGS. "With our new 'Zero D' approach, we take this concept a step further and allow designers to establish an assembly structure before committing to geometric representations, while still retaining the flexibility to work with existing geometry as required. In the end, it's about letting designers work the way they want to work, in familiar processes, not methods forced on them by the CAD system."

Additional enhancements in Solid Edge V16 for hybrid 2D/3D design include:

•  An assortment of commands that emulate AutoCADŽ workflows, making the working environment familiar to existing AutoCAD users while improving on the level of capability.

•  New tools for turning 2D layouts of assemblies into 3D models. Similar to Solid Edge's Create 3D technology for parts, the capability is now extended for assemblies.
