"High volumes and the need for speed drive electronics industries to PLM, says Ken Amann, director of research, CIMdata. Contract manufacturing began in high tech, says Amann, "and being early adopters of PLM to better manage processes and data is the next step in that shift."
Quick commoditization, especially in consumer markets, is the main culprit, Amann adds. As a product technology matures and unit prices drop, it gets difficult to tell rival products apart, and they're often purchased based solely on features, functions, and price, with little in the way of brand loyalty.
"Consequently, bringing out new products fast is vital," Amann says. "A consumer electronics company that offers a new product six weeks earlier than its competitors gains penetration and market share. Conversely, introducing a similar model four to six weeks later means the lagging company will never turn a profit on that particular model.
