Mälardalen University Purchases 500 licenses of SolidWorks Education Edition to Launch Students' Engineering Careers

Mälardalen University, one of Sweden's fastest-growing academic institutions and largest producers of engineers, has standardized on SolidWorks® 3D mechanical design and COSMOSWorksT analysis software.

Beginning this fall, the 15,000-student university will use 500 licenses of SolidWorks Education Edition software, which includes COSMOSWorks, for instruction in all engineering disciplines and departments, replacing the complex computer-aided design (CAD) software the institution used for the past five years.

"We have a finite amount of time to teach our students the skills they need, so we can't waste time with overly complicated software," said Lars Bark, senior CAD instructor at the university and member of one of the largest engineering departments in Sweden. "We chose SolidWorks because it is easy to learn and use, especially compared to our previous software, which had been forcing students to spend too much time learning complex commands. SolidWorks can do any job Pro/E can, yet is easy to understand and intuitive. As they proved when they first tried the software, students can start working and designing right away in SolidWorks, even without faculty help. By working faster, they will graduate with more understanding of the design process and with more knowledge." COSMOSWorks will likewise support students in their studies of 3D design analysis.

SolidWorks ( http://www.solidworks.com/ ) and COSMOSWorks will be especially important to the 600 students in the university's department of innovation, design, and product development (IDP), who are learning engineering research with an eye toward innovation. The department uses 3D CAD in its courses, which blend futuristic knowledge, creativity, innovation, design, and entrepreneurship with classical engineering knowledge.

Mälardalen University works with authorized SolidWorks reseller MP Engineering AB for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.

Mälardalen University is located in the cities of Västerås and Eskilstuna. It has more than 15,000 students and 950 employees. Half of the university's students are studying technical or scientific subjects. Research is carried on in seven main areas. For more information, please visit http://www.mdh.se

MP Engineering was founded in 1991 and today has 13 years of experience in CAD/CAM/CAE. With five regional offices and 40 employees, the company is one of the key resellers in the Swedish territory. Products distributed include SolidWorks, SMARTEAM, EdgeCam, and COSMOSWorks. For more information, visit http://www.mpengineering.se
