"One company that has benefited from IBM 's technology is Pratt &Whitney Canada (P&WC), a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. and employer of 9,000 worldwide.

The manufacturer implemented a PLM solution based on CATIA V5, ENOVIA VPM, ENOVIA Portal and DELMIA, and migrated 700 users in engineering and manufacturing from CATIA V4 to CATIA V5 on Windows.

Among the benefits:   CATIA V5 assembly modeling, digital mock-up, and other features save P&WC an estimated $1 million yearly, according to a study by CIMdata. Physical mock-up for interference analysis and maintenance simulation was eliminated using the IBM and Dassault technology, representing $500,000 per engine program. P&WC says that clash detection occurs now even before the first engine is built, and 70 percent of interferences are resolved at the early design stage. Manufacturing benefits included a 13 percent reduction in jig and fixture design costs, a 10percent decrease in the value of scrap, and a nearly 10percent reduction in re-work costs."
