Mr. Ferguson comes from an aerospace background, one of the main industries to be targeted by Delcam. He joined British Aerospace in 1990, combining training at the company with studying for a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Kingston University, which he completed in July 1994. He then worked as a Safety Engineer on the autopilot and weapon-aiming systems of the Harrier fighter jet, achieving Chartered Engineer status and Membership of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

During this period, Mr. Ferguson took advantage of secondments and frequent contacts with the company's initiatives in Russia to develop his Russian experience and language skills. This included working on the "Russtech" technology acquisition program and the Airbus Titanium team, and spending a period based in Moscow in 1996.

In 1997, Mr. Ferguson took up a full-time marketing role in Company Headquarters, where he worked on sales initiatives in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia and Uzbekistan. Simultaneously, he acquired a Masters degree in Marketing from Loughborough University. In 2000, shortly after the merger that formed BAE Systems, he was given responsibility for all the company's activities in the Baltic States. Late in 2001, Mr. Ferguson joined the Avionics team to help establish a new line of business - NATO-standard upgrades for Russian-built military helicopters. His efforts led to the opening of a significant sales opportunity in Bulgaria and contributed to the sale in Poland.
