UGS Accelerates Opportunities for Global University Students and Staff Through US$119 Million Software Grant

UGS ( http://www.ugs.com ) and Global University (GU) announced an in-kind software grant designed to prepare GU's graduates to more quickly and productively enter the corporate world.

Separately, UGS also today announced the re-branding of its industry-leading software grant program as GO PLM. (Please see GO PLM release.)

UGS will provide GU with software tools for PLM with a commercial value of $119 million. The in-kind grant, made through the Global University Foundation and UGS' GO PLM initiative, is the largest in GU's history.

The UGS grant will allow students to gain practical experience with a full range of PLM technologies, including computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), computer-aided engineering (CAE), visualization, digital manufacturing, collaboration, product data management (PDM) and engineering process management.

GU also plans to use the software in collaborative research with the Pervasive Technologies Laboratory at Indiana University, the School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Media Research Laboratory at a large international company in Indianapolis, the evolving health education content production studios at Ruth Lilly Health Education Center, the EDS Design Visualization Center and CAE-net's Digital Theater locations in Detroit.

GU's research plan calls for students to have simultaneous access to 3-dimensional data in specific applications for engineering, life-sciences, advanced manufacturing and other scientific courses and applications. This technology will be tested on Internet2 (I2) infrastructure connecting Ruth Lilly Health Education Center and IUPUI sites.

The first phase of GU's research will focus on Immersive Visual Collaboration Networking (IVCN) for medical and advanced manufacturing applications - both areas where there is demand for widespread high-resolution, high-quality imaging. As a part of Phase I, GU members will collaborate visually and immersively walk through the Human Circulatory System at Ruth Lilly Health Education Center. A similar visual walk through the inside of an engine block is expected to occur at the EDS Design Visualization Center in Troy, Mich.

"This is a great day for Global University, and we thank the people of UGS for making it happen," said GU Chairman Dr. K. Nema. "We are building our global visual collaboration infrastructure based on UGS' PLM technologies, in addition to using it in classroom teaching and learning. This industry-leading software will have a very significant and positive impact on all three aspects of our mission. It will help us do an even better job of preparing students to get top jobs in industry. It will help us meet the critical research needs of industry. And it will provide the technology to help our partner industries be more competitive and achieve a higher return on investment.

"This grant is proof that our effort is gaining momentum," Nema said. "It sends a clear message that GU is committed to becoming a premiere program, and UGS is helping us make that happen by providing software that will give our students a critical edge in the marketplace."

GU is among a number of institutions that have received multi-million dollar software grants from UGS, including Purdue University, Michigan State University, Brigham Young University, Iowa State University and Virginia Tech University.

Global University is engaged in the research and commercialization of immersive stereo visualization infrastructures for conferencing, meeting, educating, teaching, learning and collaboration, integrated with advanced process management utilizing rich interactive broadcasting and on-demand capabilities over wired and wireless networks. The intent is to enable meetings in immersive boardrooms, lecture halls, and classrooms without physical presence to enhance the three dimensional meeting, teaching, learning, and collaboration experiences.
