Northern Illinois University and UGS Expand Opportunities for Future Engineers

Engineering students returning to Northern Illinois University (NIU) in the fall will find an array of new software thanks to a $14 million grant to the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology from UGS.

The grant provides a broad spectrum of UGS software for computer-aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), computer aided engineering (CAE) and collaborative visualization with advanced features such as finite element analysis, optimization programs and advanced solid modeling. The software will allow students to experience firsthand the current PLM industry standards for managing the entire lifecycle of a product from concept, through production, delivery, maintenance and retirement.

"This grant allows us to put the latest in manufacturing, engineering and design software into the hands of our students, enabling them to develop the skills demanded by industries competing in today's global economy," said Promod Vohra, acting dean of NIU's College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. "This is an invaluable gift to our students. It will provide them the tools to apply technological solutions to the manufacturing process, learning how to make it more efficient and more profitable. Those are precisely the skills companies need to remain competitive today. Having access to this technology will give a competitive edge not only to our graduates, but also to the companies that hire them."

UGS' GO PLM initiative leads the industry in the commercial value of the in-kind grants it provides, more than US$2 billion in 2003, and brings together four complementary community involvement programs focused on academic partnership, regional productivity, youth and displaced worker development and the PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) program. GO PLM provides PLM technology to almost 800,000 students yearly at 7,752 global institutions, where it is used at every academic level-from middle schools to graduate engineering research programs. The NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology is the second largest public engineering program in the state of Illinois. The school currently enrolls more than 1,600 students at the graduate and undergraduate level and offers programs in mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering and technology. This grant is the second major contribution to NIU from UGS PLM Solutions, coming on the heels of a $5.6 million grant four years ago.
