UGS Introduces Next Generation Industrial Design and Styling Solutions in NXT 3

UGS announced advanced industrial design and styling capabilities in its NXT digital product development software. The offering unites the power of the company's industry-proven NX Shape Studio and Imageware® design and styling capabilities into a fully integrated, single solution.

Available with the release of NX 3 on September 15, the solution provides industrial design and styling functional excellence, scalability and full integration within NX-extending beyond individual features and functions with a focus on enhancing the complete design workflow. Companies can expect to gain significant productivity enhancements and better quality products through the integration of styling within the development process.

"Product aesthetics are a major differentiator for many companies," said Chuck Grindstaff, executive vice president, PLM Products, UGS. "Of course, marketplace success is driven by the total customer experience, which balances design capabilities, quality and cost. With NX 3, the world-class embedded styling tools link creative processes with engineering enabled rapid creation, assessment and selection of alternatives. The result is a seamless integration of all aspects of product development eliminating data transfer, increasing design efficiency and enabling users to meet demanding product cycle times with better looking, higher quality products."

NX Industrial Design and Styling

"The integration of styling tools directly into the digital product development system will significantly enhance our productivity," said Glenn Johnson, industrial design manager, B/E Aerospace, Inc. "It will completely eliminate the need for data transfer, which in the past has resulted in translation errors and loss of design intent. Additionally, we'll be better able to collaborate with engineering and manufacturing on specific product requirements, while at the same time keep control in the designer's hands-from concept to production."

  New capabilities and enhancements:

•  Allow designers to realize ideas and capture design intent quickly from a 2D sketch, 3D physical model or any other input through an easy-to-use and highly customizable user interface. This allows designers to focus on the design itself, not on the tool or the workflow.
•  Offer a complete toolset for industrial designers and automotive stylists to create production surface models. Furthermore it provides access to traditional engineering tools, knowledge driven automation and simulation and validation tools.
•  Provide users with options for 'best approach' design. Traditional systems support a single modeling approach, such as curve-based, surface-based, or sweeping-thus limiting creative freedom. NX 3 styling tools allow users to select the approach that will work best for the specific task.
•  Deliver advanced approaches to quickly merge, filter, smooth and decimate large polygonal datasets obtained from scanning devices.
•  Provide tools to capture entire workflows for the most demanding design tasks, such as the design of an aesthetic corner, "clay" sweeping and flange and gap design. Associativity ensures that everything is maintained and updates when change occurs.
•  Provide significant enhancements in real-time rendering through real- time shadow casting, and improved material display, which can be used as an initial step in design reviews and evaluations and as input for creation of high-end photorealistic images.
•  Enable designers to stay in full control from concept to manufacture of designs that are managed within the NX Managed Development Environment. All data, from artwork to production, is managed and accessible, ensuring that teams and processes are synchronized at all times.
