Restructured VSI Alliance to Accelerate Development of SoC and IP Standards, Specifications and Technical Documents

The VSI Alliance (VSIA) announced it has completed the restructuring of the organization around new working groups, called Pillars, which will address the full spectrum of system chip technical and commercial intellectual property issues. The restructuring caps months of work that will enable VSIA to accelerate development and adoption of commercially viable SoC and IP standards, specifications and technical documents.

The VSIA Board identified four critical issues that the Group could effectively address instead of the nine working groups under the previous structure. The IP Quality, IP Protection, IP Infrastructure and the R&D Pillars were formed with a minimum of four or more large companies as founding members. Other companies that can demonstrate expertise to help create standards and documents needed by the industry also are eligible to participate in Pillars. The VSIA Board believes that by identifying large corporate participants, the Organization will be more likely to produce work that reflects the broad needs of the industry and that the work will therefore be quickly adopted. This has indeed been the case with the Quality IP Metric from the IP Quality Pillar.

"Our new structure makes the Pillars autonomous and empowers the Pillar members to complete the technical work, document review and marketing in record time," said VSIA President, Michael Kaskowitz of Mentor Graphics. "Because the work is the result of the collective efforts of representatives from some of the largest SoC and IP companies in the World, we believe it accurately reflects the needs of the industry and should result in standards that are readily accepted."

Other changes to VSIA include a revised, easier to navigate website. Members and non-members are invited to participate in the new SoC Sounding Board ( http://www.vsi.org/vsiConf/ ).Additionally, VSIA recently completed board of directors elections. The new board includes representatives from Agere Systems, ARM, Cadence Design Systems, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM Corporation, Infineon Technologies, LSI Logic, Mentor Graphics, Sonics, STMicroelectronics, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC).

VSIA recently announced the release of the Hard IP Tagging Standard 1 2.0 to the membership. The Soft IP Tagging Standard will be released to the VSIA membership within the next quarter. The Quality IP (QIP) Metric is currently being revised with the addition of the analog IP worksheet, software IP worksheet and updates to the user's guide, vendor assessment worksheet and IP maturity worksheet. Additionally, the FSA and VSIA are working together to produce the Hard IP attributes and, together, these groups will market the entire QIP Metric.
