CIMdata in the News (MSI Magazine)

A group of smaller, emerging vendors has trickled into the product life-cycle management (PLM) market over the last four years. Some already are well-established; some less so. Many aren't out of the computer-aided design (CAD) space as the more established vendors tend to be. Instead, they've found other inroads to the hearts and minds of American manufacturers, and those elsewhere in the world.

In addition, some of these vendors aim their solutions almost exclusively at small to medium-size enterprises, understanding that these manufacturers have the same needs as global corporations. They need visibility into manufacturing operations, tools to link product data stored in different locations, and ways to manage change orders. But they don't always have the resources or the budget to implement large-scale PLM systems. And that's how many of these younger PLM vendors are getting a foot in the door.

"These folks are concentrating on providing that same technology, much more simply and less expensively," says Ed Miller, president of PLM consulting and research firm CIMdata, Ann Arbor, Mich.
