CIMdata in the News: "Product Life-Cycle Management (PLM) Supplement; features and functions"
Simultaneously, high-end CAD developers beefed up their flagship products featurewise, and then did something else: they changed the game by introducing product life-cycle management (PLM), a collection of software and services for product-data management with CAD as one of the underlying technologies.
"PLM is the big trendsetter in CAD today," says Paris Altidis, an engineer with Borg Warner Automotive.
That started the whole cycle over again, because today, even midrange CAD systems have some PLM aspects as part of their feature sets. And that means design engineers have more influence in decisions that affect the entire product-development cycle than when they were concerned only with design decisions.
Two different ideas
In fact, many would agree with Ann Arbor, Mich.-based CIMdata's Senior Consultant John MacKrell, when he says, "CAD is one of the cornerstones of PLM."
But not everyone. Another type of PLM has emerged that is not CAD-centric.
