Leading Commercial Lock Maker Selects SolidWorks 3D Design Software to Secure Time-To-Market and Productivity Advantage

SARGENT® Manufacturing-a provider of locks, door closers, and exit devices for commercial, institutional, and industrial markets-has standardized on SolidWorks ® 3D mechanical design software to speed products to market and accelerate design engineer productivity.

In SARGENT's intensive year-long evaluation process, the Connecticut-based company found that SolidWorks software surpassed competitors in its ability to instantly translate design files originating in other software formats. This capability lets SARGENT Manufacturing's design engineers collaborate on designs with sister and partner companies without costly, time-consuming, and error-prone manual translation.

SARGENT also found that SolidWorks software surpassed competing packages in these criteria formulated prior to the company's software evaluation: ease of use, feature set, learning curve, installation, parts modeling, assembly handling, drafting, handling of legacy .dwg AutoCAD® data, embedded analysis software, and product data management.

"We needed a software package that our engineering group and our tool-making group could use because we wanted to get them on the same package," said CAD Systems Manager Dan Leiper. "This was an extremely important purchasing decision, since we were replacing AutoCAD and I-DEAS® software, which we'd used for 10 years. We're confident in our decision and expect to see increased speed to market, closer communication with our customers, better collaboration with our partners, and ultimately higher-quality products."

The COSMOSXpressT design analysis software embedded in SolidWorks Office Professional will help SARGENT's designers and engineers minimize the numbers of prototypes they send to labs for bludgeoning, battering, and other stress tests.

Design engineers will use PDMWorks® product data management system so that any changes an engineer makes to a lock assembly design will be automatically carried across all the products it appears in. Changes will also be carried across all relevant documentation, including instruction sheets, parts books, and templates.

SARGENT Manufacturing works with authorized SolidWorks reseller R&D Technologies for ongoing software training, implementation, and support for its 26 licenses.

Founded in 1864, SARGENT is a market leader in locksets, cylinders, door closers, exit devices, electro-mechanical products, and access control systems for new construction, renovation, and replacement applications. The company's customer base includes commercial construction, institutional, and industrial markets. For more information, visit http://www.sargentlock.com or call 800-727-5477.
