UGS Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Software Grant Enhances the Center for Advanced Engineering Environments at Old Dominion University
UGS announced it is providing an in-kind software grant with a commercial value of US$1.6 million to enhance research and education at Old Dominion University's (ODU's) Center for Advanced Engineering Environments (CAEE).
As an enterprise center of ODU's Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the CAEE works in partnership with NASA and other industry leaders to develop intelligent engineering environments that allow diverse teams to work synergistically to develop efficient virtual prototypes of complex engineering systems for the aerospace industry. The environments can significantly reduce development times, lower life-cycle costs and improve the quality and performance of future engineering systems.
CAEE staff work closely with researchers from NASA, other universities and major software vendors to incorporate new developments into commercial systems, making research advances available to industry in a timely manner.
The grant provides researchers in the CAEE with a suite of software employed by today's leading manufacturing and technology companies and will aid the center in its development of collaborative distributed Engineering Knowledge and Information Management environments. These environments include the synergistic coupling of modeling, visual simulations, intelligent agent, multimedia and synthetic environments; human-computer interactions, computational intelligence, computational information and collaboration technologies in the multidisciplinary analysis; sensitivity studies, optimization, design and operation of complex aerospace systems.
"The synergistic coupling of UGS' Teamcenter® PLM product suite and the ODU CAEE facilities will provide a unique integrated intelligent environment for accelerating new product development through managing speed and value; enabling global communication of information; and providing collaboration tools for engineering organizations and business units," said Ahmed K. Noor, Eminent Scholar, William E. Lobeck Professor of Aerospace engineering and director of the Center. "It will have a profound impact on the way we teach innovative design and product development of complex engineering systems. We are looking forward to the effective use of Teamcenter in our center's research and education, and to a strong collaboration with UGS."

The grant to Old Dominion is being made through UGS' Global Opportunities in Product Lifecycle Management (GO PLM) initiative. GO PLM leads the industry in the commercial value of the in-kind grants it provides, more than US$2 billion in 2003, and brings together four complementary community involvement programs focused on academic partnership, regional productivity, youth and displaced worker development and the PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) program. GO PLM provides PLM technology to almost 800,000 students yearly at nearly 8,000 global institutions, where it is used at every academic level - from middle schools to graduate engineering research programs.
