New Direct Editing Capability in UGS' Solid Edge Version 17 Improves Interoperability
UGS announced a new "Direct Editing" capability in Solid Edge® Version 17 software to help users simplify the design of complex models and streamline interoperability with imported 3D geometry.
UGS made the announcement at a press briefing at the National Design Engineering Show in Chicago. Separately, UGS also today announced the launch of Solid Edge Version 17, its 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system (see separate release at http://www.solidedge.com/pressroom ).
Solid Edge Version 17 takes a leap forward in the mainstream CAD market by becoming the only mid-market CAD software to offer direct editing of models without the need to edit the history tree. Direct Editing allows the editing of native complex parametric models "after the fact" without the need to retrace steps in the history tree. Direct Editing also allows the editing of imported 3D geometry from any source, without the need to import features and parameters. With Direct Editing, Solid Edge extends its leadership in interoperability with NXT software and in helping customers to either co-exist with, or migrate from, competitive systems such as Pro/ENGINEER®, Autodesk Inventor® or SolidWorks®.
Direct Editing allows users to:
Quickly modify 3D data from other sources and co-exist with, or migrate from, competitive systems such as Pro/ENGINEER, Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
Quickly modify 3D models from NX, thus enhancing interoperability with NX.
Make fast efficient modifications to complex geometry including direct move, rotate and resize topology; change bend radius and angle of sheet metal models; delete holes, regions and rounds; and directly offset geometry.
Add intelligence to an un-parameterized model. Any time a direct edit is made, changes to that direct edit can now be driven by parametric values.
Simplify surplus detail to protect intellectual property prior to distribution to suppliers.
Easily change the size of a component.
"With Direct Editing, customers no longer need to deal with the history tree of very complex models," said Dan Staples, director Solid Edge product line for UGS. "This allows easier editing of all geometry regardless of source, while eliminating the need to import features from external models in order to reuse geometry. Direct Editing is just one more way that Solid Edge helps users to Design with Insight."
"Direct editing in Solid Edge opens new business opportunities for MASCO, allowing us to quickly and easily correct poorly modeled designs from other CAD systems, instead of having to start from scratch," said Rick Mason, director, MASCO Design Services Pty Ltd. (Oyster Bay, Australia). "We'll use direct editing immediately for a customer that needs to fix design errors on an athletic mouth guard so that they can accurately build the mold tooling needed for manufacturing."
Solid Edge ( http://www.solidedge.com ) from UGS is 3D CAD software that allows manufacturing companies to Design with Insight and achieve competitive advantage through cost reduction, while increasing top line revenues.
