A consultant can help a company understand its needs, align the product with the company's business strategy, and help assess technology requirements, said CIMdata's Miller. "The project should be essentially driven and understood by the department heads," he said. "It's not an engineering project, and it's not an IT project, although IT should be involved to support the system."
