High-Fidelity Aerospace & Defense CFD Simulations with FLUENT 6.2

Fluent Inc. announced the latest release of its flagship software, FLUENT 6.2. This release features numerous enhancements that broaden the scope of aerospace and defense problems that can now be solved. In addition, beta testers have reported dramatic speed-ups ranging from two to ten-fold for transient simulations. With many commercial firsts and innovations in the CFD industry over the last 20 years, Fluent has established a reputation as the company that can make the aerospace and defense industry's toughest problems tractable.

Important enhancements in FLUENT 6.2 include:

•  Improvements to FLUENT's Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence models for more accurate predictions of aerodynamics and noise,

•  Expansion of FLUENT's unique dynamic mesh capabilities, including the incorporation of a six-degrees-of-freedom solver for store release and stage separation simulations, and new techniques for modeling gear pumps and valves,

•  More robust rotor/stator simulations for gas turbine engines,

•  A new solar load model for studying aircraft cabin environments,

•  Dynamic mesh adaption for capturing traveling shocks accurately, for example, bow shocks in front of dropped stores and blast waves produced by the firing of tank rounds,

•  Improvements to the SST k-omega turbulence model for more accurate prediction of aerodynamic drag,

•  Fast, high resolution capture of free surfaces and other wave structures in marine applications as well as fuel tanks

.

Commenting on the relevance of FLUENT 6.2 to the sector, Greg Stuckert, Director of Fluent's Global Aerospace and Defense Market Segment said, "Our goal with this release is consistent with our past track record: to promote the productivity and success of our aerospace & defense clients with the most versatile CFD software available, solving routine problems quickly and efficiently, and difficult problems easily and accurately."
