Intergraph Awards $400,000 In Educational Grants To U. S. Institutions

Intergraph Corporation announced that its Process, Power & Marine division has awarded SmartPlant® Review 3D visualization and SmartSketch® precision drafting, drawing and diagramming software with a commercial value of more than $400,000 (U. S.) to Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Penn.; Tri-State University, Angola, Ind., and the Boston Architectural Center, Boston, Mass.

The Educational Grant Program (ppm.intergraph.com/education) awards software to institutions of higher learning and technology worldwide to help students become better qualified graduates with real-world experience in using the most advanced tools for engineering, designing and operating process and power plants and offshore facilities. Since inception in 2004, the program has awarded 15 grants totaling more than $4.7 million in commercial value to educational institutions worldwide.

Under its educational grant valued commercially at $237,440, Pennsylvania State University is using SmartPlant Review in engineering courses augmented by its immersive 3D stereo display facilities (ppm.intergraph.com/library/reprints/rp-5-1cave-us.pdf). John Messner, Ph.D., assistant professor, Architectural Engineering, said, "Intergraph SmartPlant Review will allow Penn State to develop 3D and 4D construction simulation models and view these visualizations within our large, immersive stereo display systems. This will prove valuable in teaching complex design and construction sequencing while familiarizing students with advanced software technology."

"Penn State has one of the most advanced immersive display systems facilities," said Robert Christian, senior manager of Global Business Development-Visualization, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine. "The students understand innovative 3D visualization concepts for constructability analysis and statusing. The university is definitely advancing practical technology education in this area and the Intergraph grant will help Penn State further its visualization program to benefit students and their future employers."

At Tri-State University, the SmartSketch grant with a commercial value of $76,400 will support courses in engineering design within the mechanical engineering curriculum. Tri-State University (TSU) is a private, nondenominational baccalaureate and master's degree-granting institution. TSU combines rigorous academic study in engineering, education, business and liberal arts and sciences with practical, career-focused training for the real world of work.

Ramiro Bravo, Ph.D., professor, Tri-State University, said, "The Intergraph Educational Grant Program helps Tri-State University to achieve its goal of enabling students to become productive as soon as they enter the work force. Intergraph SmartSketch is a very friendly 2D program that students can start using as freshmen, helping them effectively communicate ideas graphically and become proficient in the use of software tools."

The Boston Architectural Center plans to use its SmartSketch grant (valued commercially at $86,800) in architectural design courses. Founded in 1889, the Boston Architectural Center is a private, coeducational institution featuring a predominantly volunteer faculty and concurrent academic and practice curricula. The program enables students to work in architectural-related jobs during the day and attend courses at night.

The Intergraph Process, Power & Marine Educational Grant Program

(ppm.intergraph.com/education) helps build student proficiency and experience in using engineering software. For educational institutions, the program brings advanced technology software to the classroom, expands course offerings at minimal cost and enables instructors to upgrade skills through free commercial training. The program also provides industry with qualified job candidates trained to use the popular Intergraph engineering software. Educational institutions worldwide with engineering and technical curricula associated with the process manufacturing, power generation and offshore petroleum industries are eligible to apply for grants, which have a one-year, renewable term.

Grant recipients under the standard program are eligible to receive SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical and SmartSketch software and maintenance; instructor training; technical installation assistance; and one complimentary registration for the Intergraph Process, Power & Marine APEX industry conference series. A program option includes Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS®), SmartPlant 3D and SmartPlant Review, depending on institution curriculum and expertise. Intergraph awards educational grants nonexclusively, without restriction concerning existing or future installations of software from other vendors, to help widen student educational horizons and broaden school curricula.

The Intergraph software (ppm.intergraph.com/products) is widely used in design, construction, operations and maintenance in a variety of industries including onshore and offshore oil and gas, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, power generation, chemicals, metals and mining, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and others.
