Barra Grande Hydropower Plant Project in Brazil Noted as Extraordinary

ENGEVIX Engenharia , a Brazilian company specializing in technical consulting services, has been nominated for a 2005 BE Award for its Barra Grande hydropower plant project in Brazil.

The BE Awards of Excellence, which are being presented tonight at the BE Conference , honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world's infrastructure. These projects set benchmarks for their industries, and showcase the imagination and technical mastery of the organizations that created them.

ENGEVIX was responsible for all engineering and design services for the 690-megawatt Barra Grande project, now under construction along the Pelotas River. Brazilian federal authorities consider the project, which includes a 185-meter-high concrete-faced rockfill dam - one of the highest in the world - to be crucial to guaranteeing the supply of electrical energy to the country, as well as to supporting the country's economic growth.

The project demanded technology capable of providing a productive, reliable environment, allowing integration among the various disciplines. Thousands of drawings had to be created and revised regularly throughout an extensive schedule that involved quick decisions. The technology also needed the agility to redefine the stages of the project while also offering the ability to share contract and project information with project partners and customers.

Bentley products, including MicroStation, MicroStation TriForma, MicroStation PowerDraft, and Bentley Redline, provided complete solutions for each of the disciplines. They were distinguished by ease of use, 3D visualization, and a high degree of integration resulting from MicroStation's support of DWG and DGN formats. The 3D visualization not only improved detection of interferences, but also enabled designers to better understand the installation and to see the space as it would appear in real life.

Said Josi Antunes Sobrinho , vice president Energy and Water Resources, "From the beginning, we were sure that designing in 3D was essential for us to reach our quality goals, raise our productivity, as well as to make ENGEVIX even more competitive. We were also aware that this was a challenging step, but we decided to take it, as we were confident it was possible. Undoubtedly, Bentley has given us the necessary technology to achieve our aim, as its resources were fundamental for ENGEVIX to achieve currently great success in project design."

About 5,000 documents were created during the project, including drawings, bills of material, iron lists, reports, and so on. And if revisions of each document by the team of 66 people involved are included, the number increases to 7,000.
