Carnival Counts on EMC Corporation for Top Performance of World's Largest Cruise Operation-EMC Smarts Software Provides Actionable Intelligence Necessary To Ensure Reliability of World-Class, Networked Infrastructure May 2005

EMC Corporation announced that Carnival Cruise Lines is using EMC Smarts software as the core analysis and impact assessment engine for its network infrastructure. Carnival is the world's largest cruise line, carrying approximately 3.3 million passengers annually aboard its fleet of 20 "Fun Ships."

Carnival is employing a range of Smarts software to view the status of its information technology resources at a glance and determine how the health of those resources is affecting business-critical services. The company is utilizing the software to ensure the reliability of its core networked infrastructure, which consists of hundreds of network devices and several key applications.

"For a cruise line, the performance of our IT infrastructure is essential, as it immediately impacts the service we provide our guests and the communications to our shipboard networks and applications," said Tom McCormick, Manager of Network Engineering for Carnival Cruise Lines. "As a result, we needed a solution that could quickly identify problems anywhere in our IT infrastructure, regardless of the platform. With its high degree of automation and end-to-end correlation, EMC Smarts is the only software that allows us to manage our infrastructure at a business application level, by proactively detecting problems before they impact our service levels."

With EMC Smarts Business Impact Manager, Carnival is able to model critical business processes and automatically assess the impact of network, system and application issues on its core business services. Using EMC Smarts Service Assurance Manager, Carnival further integrates and correlates this management information -- events, topology, and analysis -- from multiple heterogeneous sources. Service Assurance Manager then integrates directly with the EMC Smarts Business Dashboard to provide end-to-end visibility into Carnival's IT and business environment.

Using EMC Smarts Application Insight, Carnival is able to correlate application performance with the health of its network and software processes, determining the root cause of problems before they become disruptive. EMC Smarts IP Availability Manager quickly auto-discovers details of Carnival's IT network, proactively diagnosing the root cause of Layer 2 and Layer 3 problems.

"Keeping tabs on the performance of increasingly complex IT networks is becoming more and more of a headache for IT managers," said Chris Gahagan, Senior Vice President, EMC Software. "To fully ensure the availability of their core infrastructures, market leaders like Carnival demand the most accurate and actionable information concerning their networks, systems, and applications -- all in alignment with the business services they support. We're pleased that Carnival has recognized the products from EMC Smarts as the only software with the built-in intelligence necessary to meet these needs and the flexibility to accommodate their growing business."
