EMC Announces New Generation of Content Classification Software

SEMC Corporation announced a new generation of its Content Intelligence Services (CIS)-EMC Documentum CIS 5.3, a powerful add-on to the EMC Documentum 5.3 platform, the world's first major enterprise content management (ECM) offering based on a completely unified architecture.

"The proliferation of data within organizations has greatly increased the need to efficiently organize content to enable subsequent reuse. To that extent, our customers require tools that can decrease the time by which content is processed, classified, and categorized so the content is best utilized across the entire organization," said Dave DeWalt, President, EMC Software. "We've responded by releasing a new generation of automatic classification technology that supports multiple languages and enables organizations to leverage distributed human competences."

EMC Documentum CIS 5.3 is software that automates the classification and categorization of enterprise content. It offers advanced classification capabilities that can organize content based on information extraction and business rules, and categorize the content for easier navigation. New innovations in Documentum CIS 5.3 provides customers a smoother transition path between manual and fully automatic classification and now enables content to be classified in multiple languages:

•  Distributed competence management: Is a new capability to Documentum CIS 5.3 that enables customers to leverage human competence of individuals in various functions and distribute the categorization responsibilities across departments within an organization to classify content. A built-in role and user interface allows category owners or experts to manually make a classification decision in cases where the automated rules cannot classify the content with sufficient confidence. Category owners can enhance the classification rules and they can continue building out their branch of the corporate taxonomy. This new capability eliminates the "shock effect" most customers have when entrusting the classification to a completely automated system.

•  Multiple language support: Documentum CIS 5.3 is the first ECM offering to support classification of multi-lingual content by enabling content classification in native languages against native taxonomies. Among the new supported languages are English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish.

•  Prepackaged taxonomies: Documentum CIS 5.3 further simplifies the adoption of automated classification by providing a prepackaged set of ready-to-use taxonomies for various industries and functional areas within an organization. Documentum CIS 5.3 now includes automotive, chemicals, drug and disease, energy, engineering, energy, legislation, financial, healthcare, high tech, military, and pharmaceutical industry taxonomies, and CRM, HR, IT, legal, marketing and other functional taxonomies.

•  Unified architecture: Because Documentum CIS 5.3 is built on the Documentum 5.3 platform, it shares a common repository, services, and API (application programming interface). As a result, customers can conduct classification within the same repository in which they manage or archive their content, and they can easily expose automated classification as a service to content applications and business processes. It also provides content classification for any text-based content type including documents, Web content, XML, OCRed images and other content types.
