PTC Affirms Zero Tolerance Anti-Piracy Stance
PTC affirmed its strong stance against software piracy and announced that the company has become a worldwide member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The BSA is an industry association dedicated to the protection of intellectual property. BSA programs foster technology innovation through education and policy initiatives that promote copyright protection, cyber security, trade and e-commerce.
According to the 2004 "Annual BSA and IDC Global Software Piracy Study," the global piracy rate in 2003 was 36% and amounted to $29 billion in lost revenue to the software industry.
PTC has already implemented a zero tolerance policy regarding piracy of its software. In the last two years, PTC licensing enforcement has resulted in the recovery of more than $4 million in revenue from pirated software. PTC advocates a multi-pronged approach incorporating pricing, technology, educational and legal initiatives to stem the tide of software piracy. The company's anti-piracy strategy includes:
License management enhancements
Digital rights management to enable the protection of customer intellectual property
Reseller and customer anti-piracy educational campaigns
Auditing and prosecuting known pirates
"Software piracy is a global issue that impacts all industries and requires a universal solution. As more companies look to Global Product Development, they face the dilemma that the highest areas for business growth are also in many cases the markets with the highest piracy rates," said C. Richard Harrison, president and chief executive officer, PTC. "PTC's membership in BSA complements our anti-piracy initiatives and provides a forum to build an industry coalition with the shared objective of obliterating the theft of intellectual property. We win and, equally important, our customers win."
Robert Holleyman, president and CEO of the Business Software Alliance noted, "BSA is pleased to welcome PTC to our membership. The PTC team will be an invaluable ally in BSA's efforts to promote innovative policies and establish public/private partnerships that effectively protect intellectual property."
