Arauco Uses AVEVA's PDMS Global on Mammoth New Pulp Mill

AVEVA congratulated Arauco (Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion S.A.) on its ongoing successful management of its US $1 billion Itata sawmill and woodpulp plant project. The project is using AVEVA's Plant Design Management System (PDMS) Global software to link its offices round the world.

Arauco, based in Chile, is one of the world's largest forestry companies in terms of plantation size, lumber processing and production of market kraft pulp.

Located near Concepcion, near the port of Talcahuano, the Itata mill will produce 850,000 tons of woodpulp each year, comprised of 50% pine and 50% eucalyptus. The mill will be equipped with the latest environmental protection technology and also is expected to generate 60 megawatts of excess electricity, which will be sold to the Chilean national power grid.

With the Itata Pulp Mill and the existing five wood pulp mills, Arauco will have a combined annual capacity of about 3.1 million metric tonnes of bleached and unbleached kraft pulp.

The project is being managed via a centralized information hub in Santiago, Chile. Arauco is acting as both General Construction Manager and Owner/Operator for the Itata facility, coordinating the design and engineering work with over 40 international contractors and 20 satellite offices worldwide. Utilizing PDMS, information is continually synchronized with the master 3D plant model, ensuring that reliable, 100% accurate data is available online at any time.

Italo Tapia A., Engineering Director for Arauco commented: "As the owner/operator of this facility for the next 30 years, Arauco has a vested interest in ensuring the quality and integrity of the design data from the beginning. Whereas our Valdivia project used both PDMS and PDS data, we're now improving even more our engineering process in Itata by mandating PDMS as the sole design tool, having centralized data in our Santiago offices. We have been truly amazed at the volume of information and project participates that we can manage with PDMS Global."

VANTAGE Plant Design Management System (PDMS) is a solution for 3D process plant design featuring applications and reference data for every engineering discipline. It differs from conventional 3D approaches by not requiring a drawing engine, but producing graphics directly from a single, coherent data model of the entire plant. AVEVA's PDMS was developed in 1974 based on a technology philosophy for applications that would 'live forever'. In 30 years the system has evolved smoothly through seven distinct operating systems. As version 11.6 is released using Microsoft's® .NET technology, the concept has proved itself once again.

Forestry enterprise Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion operates a group of companies known as Arauco. The company owns the largest area of forest plantations (610,000 hectares) in Chile, with radiata pine as the principal timber crop, as well as 87,000 hectares in Misiones province, Argentina (mainly taeda pine) and 12,000 hectares in Uruguay. Arauco produces market kraft woodpulp, sawntimber, and wood panels. The company operates industrial facilities in Chile and Argentina. Compania de Petroleos de Chile S.A. (COPEC) owns 99.98% of the shares of Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion S.A.

AVEVA Group plc is a lifecycle engineering IT solutions and services provider to the oil and gas, paper and pulp, power, chemical, pharmaceutical and shipbuilding industries. The Group reported pre-tax profits for the year ended March 2004 of GBP 6.1 million on a turnover of GBP 38 million, a growth in turnover of 113% in five years.
