Gamesa Optimizes Its Technical Publications Process with PTC® Product Development System

PTC announced that Gamesa, a supplier of products and solutions for renewable energy generation, has expanded its current implementation of the PTC Product Development System (PDS) to cover the creation, management and publishing of product related documentation. With Arbortext®, PTC’s product information delivery software, Gamesa will now be able to produce high quality and more effective documentation in less time.

With over 7,000 employees worldwide, the group headquartered in Vitoria (Spain) develops, manufactures and installs wind turbines as well as builds complete wind farms for customers in Europe, US and Asia. Operation and maintenance of these installations require an enormous amount of personalized documentation, complex to maintain and update. The delivery of accurate and high quality tailored technical publications, in a timely and cost-effective manner, is a key factor for Gamesa to meet its customers´ ever increasing expectations.

Gamesa has been a longstanding customer of PTC and uses Windchill® to manage and control all product information that, in the case of Gamesa, is originated by a variety of CAD systems. With this investment, Gamesa has added another integral component of the PDS, Arbortext, so that the company can now address the management of all product-related documentation in an integral manner with the rest of its product information. This will ensure the consistency between the product data and the associated technical documentation required today in Gamesa´s business, and will place the company in a much better position to face continuous changes and drive product innovation.

With PTC´s Arbortext and Windchill, Gamesa will now be able to automatically create different types of documents from one single source of content, using the same pieces of information in different style sheets and publishing them in PDF and other formats. “We expect PTC's software to greatly enhance efficiency and productivity of our technical publications process. The availability to automate the creation of the different document types and reuse information will let us provide our customers better and more consistent documentation in less time,” explains Gonzalo Coloma, head of product support, Gamesa. “Customers will also benefit from these improvements as better documentation facilitates usability and maintenance of our products.”

Given tight project schedules and quality requirements, Arbortext, while being both cost effective and low risk, also proved to be the fastest solution to implement. PTC’s Global Support Organization (GSO) has been strongly involved in the project, helping Gamesa to implement the new solution, which, includes setting up standard based document type definitions (DTD) and reorganizing the technical publications processes.

“A product cannot ship without documentation, hence more and more companies are looking at the process of creating and delivering product information as they strive to improve time to market and cut product development costs," explains Peter Velikin, director, Arbortext product and market strategy, PTC. "Arbortext, PTC’s product information delivery solution enables companies to leverage product information created during the product development process to concurrently develop products and documentation, and to deliver product information in the ideal format that is in synch with product configurations and is tailored for each reader."

The PTC® PDS helps companies optimize a wide variety of product development processes including technical publications. For technical publications, the PDS combines text authoring, technical illustrations, content management and configuration management, dynamic publishing and graphics visualization. Additionally, the PDS enables an organization to automatically publish information in multiple formats, languages, and media. PTC’s integral system lowers deployment risks and support costs by providing interoperability and integration of all components.
