HDR Saves $1.48 Million in Travel Costs, Reduces Carbon Emissions by 581 Metric Tons With Bentley’s ProjectWise Collaboration System
HDR, an architectural, engineering, and consulting firm, won a 2008 Be Awards of Excellence in the “Innovation in Road and Bridge” and “Connecting Project Teams” categories for its new five-level Southwest Parkway Interchange in Fort Worth, Texas. The project is featured in the new publication “The Year in Infrastructure 2008,” available online from Bentley Systems at http://www.bentley.com/YearInInfrastructure2008. The design included two miles of new roadway and six-lane mainlines on the Southwest Parkway with localized frontage roads. By using Bentley’s ProjectWise collaboration system to connect people and information across offices, rather than relocating design team members to the project’s office headquarters in Dallas, HDR saved more than $1.48 million in travel costs and reduced its carbon emissions by 581 metric tons.
The project also included the design of more than one mile of State Highway 183 reconstruction with new frontage roads, nine direct connectors to Interstate 20, 15 slip ramps, and a cross-street underpass reconstruction. To meet the project’s deadline of 18 months from notice-to-proceed to final design, HDR needed to pool multiple resources for bridge and roadway design. To complete the project successfully and within the tight time frame, the firm mobilized a design team comprising 134 HDR engineers, CAD designers, and staff from 12 offices, along with more than 40 team members from four sub-consultants. HDR installed ProjectWise on the workstations at each subcontractor and made sure those users were connected to HDR’s database. It also provided all team members with hands-on ProjectWise training.
Commenting on the project, John Quintero, ProjectWise coordinator and professional associate at HDR, said, “The $1.48 million cost savings associated with using ProjectWise to connect our design team reflect the great return on investment that ProjectWise can provide. However, the greatest benefit directly associated with using Bentley products is a satisfied client. HDR’s design team received high marks on its recent design submittal, further verifying the success of our implementation of Bentley’s advanced software. ProjectWise added value by providing a consistent and efficient way to share work, manage documents, increase productivity, and produce quality project deliverables.”
