Siemens PLM Software’s Technology Used by More Than 90 Percent of Automakers Displayed at 2010 Geneva International Motor Show

Siemens PLM Software announced its technology enabled the development and manufacture of more than 90 percent of the vehicles that top selling automakers exhibited at the 80th International Motor Show in Geneva.

“Siemens PLM Software is used extensively in the automotive industry. Of the top 30 automakers, 26 use our technology in the development and manufacturing of their vehicles,” said Dave Taylor, senior global director, automotive and machinery industry marketing, Siemens PLM Software. “That’s more than any of our competitors.”

Siemens PLM Software’s technology is used by automakers and suppliers to collaborate, plan, design and validate the development and manufacturing engineering of vehicles. The tools satisfy the needs of leading automakers for managed collaboration across complex engineering functions and throughout the extended supply chain. By breaking down barriers between engineering functions, providing real-time access to information, and performing analysis and simulation, Siemens PLM Software has delivered double-digit efficiency improvements.

The vehicles of tomorrow, as evidenced by those revealed at this year’s Geneva show, will be differentiated by intelligent features that integrate mechanical functions with electronic controls, driven by software and connected by physical wiring. Consumer’s demand for a connected vehicle, with increased safety and convenience features is driving increased vehicle complexities. Because of these demands, the number of embedded software systems, which currently make up 70-90 percent of all automotive innovations, are predicted to increase another 30-40 percent in the next three years.

“Managing, integrating and synchronizing the domain and product information, as well as the globally distributed development team and supply chain can be overwhelming for companies using traditional tools and processes,” explained Taylor. “Our PLM software solutions provide a rich, integrated environment to help manage the complexity driven by mechatronics and make it a competitive advantage for automakers.”

Siemens PLM Software’s solutions allow the automotive industry to more effectively integrate a company’s mechanical, electrical, electronic and software domains to develop more complex, differentiated vehicles that consumers want to drive.
