LMS to Attend 2011 Modelica Conference

LMS International will take part in the 2011 Modelica Conference in Dresden, Germany from March 20-22, 2011. At this community event, LMS will present two research papers and experts will be on hand at the LMS booth to share and discuss the latest Modelica developments on the LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim system simulation platform.

Since the 2009 conference, LMS has expanded in the Modelica project via the acquisition of Emmeskay and large internal investments. Emmeskay is highly involved in the Modelica community and its projects, including sponsorships and memberships to the Modelica Design Group, the Modelica Association and Open Source Modelica. LMS plans to continue this level of involvement.

LMS Modelica experts will present two topics: Strong Coupling of Modelica System-Level Models with Detailed CFD Models for Transient Simulation of Hydraulic Components in their Surrounding Environment on Monday, March 21, 2011 and Enforcing Reliability of Discrete-Time Models in Modelica on Tuesday, March 22, 2011.

Antoine Viel, Senior Expert Co-Simulation & Multi-physics Modeling at LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim will present the first topic that describes an efficient way to couple a Modelica system-level model with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to simulate hydraulic components within a hydraulic circuit. The presentation will explain the methodology and associated technology required to establish co-simulation between a Modelica model, simulated with an ODE/DAE solver like the one found in LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim, and a 3D flow model computed by CFD software. A test case will be discussed.

Sebastien Furic, Senior Expert Symbolic Analysis on the Solver & Interface Team at LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim will present the second topic that analyzes Modelica models involving discrete-time aspects. In this paper, LMS will present simple examples of models that give unexpected or surprising results, explain the general causes of such behavior and propose the notion of “a clock” in the language to solve these types of issues.

In addition to the 2011 conference, LMS continues to support the establishment of Modelica as the industrial reference for system modeling through several European research projects, including MODELISAR and OPENPROD. MODELISAR examines system design and embedded software in vehicles to develop a functional mock-up interface for simplified model exchange between design environments. OPENPROD seeks to provide a whole-product model-driven rapid system development, modeling and simulation environment for industrial modeling and simulation tools.

“2011 will be a proactive year in terms of Modelica at LMS. With our continued investment and commitment to open-source Modelica-based tools, we are looking forward to working with all the members of the community to advance the code and standardize the language to ensure Modelica becomes the future simulation standard. Introducing a flexible and open-source simulation standard that bridges software tools and technologies will ultimately serve the greater engineering community and the products they develop,” stated Stefaan Goossens, Vice-President, Simulation Division, LMS International.
