World Famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump Modeled With Tekla BIM Software

The all-new Holmenkollen ski jump hosts the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships' big hill competition today. To meet the FIS standards, Oslo's famed national symbol, the old Holmenkollen Ski Jump has been replaced with a totally new construction. The new Holmenkollen Ski Jump has been modeled with Tekla BIM (Building Information Modeling) software.

The new Ski Jump, made with over 1000 tons of steel, is an excellent monument of the art of engineering. The world's most modern ski jump made of steel rises an impressive 58 meters in the air.

COWI located in Sweden used Tekla Structures to plan the steel construction for Lecor Steel Technology AB, who were responsible for the steel fabrication. Holmenkollen Ski Jump's unique and exceptional steel structure was the contributing factor for COWI to choose Tekla Structures for the 3D modeling. The software was used to simulate the assembly process and all temporary constructions during the assembly period. The model was also used to compare the coordinates with actual positions during the critical parts of the heavy lifting that was made.

In addition to COWI's fantastic job we were totally dependent on Tekla as software. It gave us the advantage to have complete control over all symmetry and the placement of the components, says Tennce Carlsson, manager at Lecor Steel Technology AB.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump isn't the first big sports monument modeled with Tekla software. For example the new Wembley stadium in London, the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing and the Yas Marina F1 circuit in Abu Dhabi have all been modeled with the same Finnish software.

No room for errors

One of the advantages of using Tekla Structures for this type of construction modeling is the knowledge that the parts being modeled really fit perfectly when put in place. Another crucial advantage is that the numbers of incorrect construction units are minimized.

It is totally out of the question to make any errors when designing a unique steel construction like the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. We knew Tekla Structures to be a very trustworthy and competent program. Considering the complex construction work consisting of 25 000 different pieces and a tight time schedule, the project would not have been possible to do in any other way, says Andreas Almgren, manager, structural engineering at COWI.

Working so close together with a contractor that has such good knowledge of the digital tool as Lecor has been a privilege. We may be excellent alone but with Tekla software and Lecor as a contractor we've been outstanding together, he continues.

The Ski Jump, designed by the Danish JDS Architects, is also visually impressive. The simple and streamlined shape comes with extensive use of lightning. The silhouette of the ski jump can be seen from far away, and it has become an even more obvious landmark in Oslo.

Facts about the Holmenkollen Ski Jump:

 The hill size is 134 meters

 The K point is 120 meters

 Hill record is held by Anders Jacobsen at 142,5 meters
