IFS Applications 8 Developed Entirely Using Agile Methodology

IFS launches the new generation of its extended ERP suite, IFS Applications, entirely based on an agile development methodology. By using agile methodology, customer feedback is incorporated into the system throughout the development process.

The development of IFS Applications 8, which started in September 2009, represents IFS’s most significant product investment to date. The project also marks the first time in the company’s history that a full-scale agile development methodology has been deployed for a new generation of IFS Applications.

By relying entirely on an agile development methodology, IFS has reduced work in progress by 60 percent, increased its deliveries by a factor of 10, and achieved a 30 percent enhancement in quality.

IFS’s agile development methodology is 80 percent based on SCRUM methodology and the iterations typically run for 2-4 weeks. Toward the end of each iteration, the solution is presented to an IFS customer or customer representative, who evaluates the functionality and provides feedback on possible improvements. By focusing on the expressed need of the customer, the right solution is developed in the right way, at the right time, thereby ensuring on-time delivery, low costs and high quality.

IFS Applications 8 has been deployed at five early adopter customer sites around the world in order to test the system in a live environment. These are Brightpoint, Portsmouth Aviation, Remmele Engineering, Teracom, and VBG GROUP. The feedback gathered during the early adopter program has formed the basis for the final adjustments of the product before its release to the market.

“With our agile methodology, we are always ready to respond to changing market requirements and customer needs. By centering our activities on our customers, we ensure the right solution is delivered at the very highest level of quality. Agile development also means that we get closer to our customers and their needs, thereby keeping our lines of communication open for new ideas and feedback,” said Thomas Säld, VP Research & Development, IFS.
