Copper Producer Standardizes on EMC Solution to Manage Engineering Content and Process Flow

EMC Corporation today announced that Chilean state-own Codelco has implemented EMC® Documentum® Engineering, Plant, and Facilities Management solution (EPFM) to securely access, manage, share, and transmit mission-critical engineering content across the organization and its global network of suppliers. By standardizing on EPFM, Codelco has increased operational efficiencies and enhanced collaboration while minimizing risks.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS:

  • Enhanced Collaboration — Centralized information management infrastructure enables Codelco to securely access the most up-to-date construction site information and engineering files – boosting document retrieval time from 10 hours to 10 minutes and enhancing the exchange of information across the organization and with external suppliers.
  • Increased Efficiencies — With EPFM, Codelco improved transmittal process and streamlined operational efficiencies by automating core business processes. Time-sensitive documents are now routed electronically through pre-built workflows, reducing the review and approval process from days to hours.
  • Improved Business Agility — EPFM enables Codelco to support thousands of users, establish best practices and ensure on-time project delivery through a repeatable, industry-based and fully configurable solution.

CUSTOMER CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS:

As a top copper producer, Codelco manufactures approximately 1.6 million tons of fine copper per year and holds 20% of the world’s copper reserve. With 18,000 employees and an aggressive copper mine expansion strategy, Codelco needed a centralized information management solution to better manage complex design, engineering and construction projects; boost the efficiency in existing mines and ensure on-time project delivery while meeting compliance with relevant environmental, health and safety regulations. Codelco also needed to ensure that information management best practices could be re-issued time and time again as they expanded operations.

Codelco turned to EMC and selected EPFM for its easy deployment and low total cost of ownership. With EPFM, Codelco has improved operational efficiencies, and achieved greater collaboration across the enterprise and with external suppliers by providing secure access to project-related information and automating core business processes. In addition, Codelco eliminated the risk of misfiling or losing project data while reducing time to retrieve critical engineering documents from hours down to minutes.

Eugenio Gómez, Technology Platform Director, Projects Vice-Presidency, Codelco:

“During large engineering and construction projects, it is critical to have immediate access to project and engineering information as individuals across the globe - employees, subcontractors and vendors - must collaborate on the creation, review and approval of a wide variety of project and engineering documentation. With Documentum EPFM, we are securely and effectively creating, sharing, maintaining large volumes of engineering-related content that is critical to the entire asset management lifecycle. As a result, we have streamlined approval and transmittal processes, enhanced collaboration, gained user acceptance and developed best practices.”
