Soler & Palau Uses ADT’s TURBOdesign1 to Develop New Fan Designs in Less Time

Advanced Design Technology (ADT) today announced that its customer Soler & Palau Ventilation Group (Soler & Palau), an international company with a facility located in Jacksonville, Fla., completed a project using ADT’s TURBOdesign1 three-dimensional (3D) inverse design technology software. Soler & Palau used TURBOdesign1 to develop a new fan design that meets Europe’s Ecodesign Directive requirements.

“Soler & Palau engineers needed a way to develop optimized blade designs quickly, so we decided to evaluate the three dimensional (3D) inverse engineering capabilities of TURBOdesign1 software,” said Guillem Bordas, project manager, Soler & Palau. “A plus is we believe TURBOdesign Suite will make it easier for junior engineers who join our company to complete the knowledge transfer from the senior engineers more quickly.”

Soler & Palau’s A-MAX fan project focused on developing the axial fans, equipped with efficient brushless electronically commutated (EC) motors, for launch this month. Time-to-market for the development was a factor in selecting TURBOdesign1 as the 3D inverse design technology significantly reduces design times. Soler & Palau engineers completed the design and development of the new axial fans in less time than a typical design cycle.

Bordas estimates that it took approximately two weeks to arrive at a very good blade geometry solution, whereas comparable past projects took approximately one month of blade only design time.

ADT’s TURBOdesign Suite is a unique aerodynamic and hydrodynamic 3D design software package that allows users to design, analyze and optimize all types of turbomachinery, such as axial, mixed-flow or centrifugal pumps, compressors, fans, turbines and torque converters. Using the software, designers evaluate turbomachinery package size and performance predictions; perform detailed 3D blade design with 3D inverse design capabilities; analyze flow information per component; stage performances with turbomachinery specific 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD); and automate exploration of the design space with automatic optimization capabilities.

“Our 3D inverse design optimization technology provides innovative solutions while reducing development time and costs,” said Professor Mehrdad Zangeneh, founder and managing director of ADT. “TURBOdesign1 software eliminates trial and error and helps engineers view a larger design space. Even new engineers are productive within days.”
