Koenig & Bauer Consolidates its PLM Systems with PROSTEP

Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), one of the largest press manufacturers worldwide, is relying on the support of PROSTEP AG to consolidate and optimize its PLM systems.

KBA (www.kba.com) offers one of the broadest product range in the industry and is a key supplier to the global media industry. KBA’s core competence is the development and manufacture of technologically innovative yet cost-effective printing systems and peripherals.

The venerable company was founded in 1817 in Würzburg, Germany, and since that time has continually expanded the number of locations and its product portfolio. This in turn has led to a corresponding heterogeneity of the software systems used for product development.

KBA has secured the support of PROSTEP AG to help consolidate its systems with the aim of safeguarding its competitive capabilities over the long-term and exploiting synergies. PROSTEP brings many years of PLM experience and expertise to the ambitious project with a unique combination of process know-how and OpenPDM, the leading product for PLM system integration worldwide.

An initial step will involve harmonizing the PLM systems at KBA and consolidating them in such a way that established processes can be preserved and productive processes can continue to execute undisturbed.

This will involve consolidating the two current Teamcenter databases and merging them into one uniform system, among other things. In addition, an electro-mechanical data model will be developed for Teamcenter to allow data from all the disciplines involved in the design process to be managed in a product structure in Teamcenter.

ERP consolidation and process optimization is then planned for a subsequent phase. To prepare the ground as best possible, a flexible interface between the new Teamcenter database, the current ERP systems and a large number of KBA-specific tools will be implemented on the basis of OpenPDM. This interface can also be used later to integrate a standard ERP system in the development processes to ensure parallel operation of a standard ERP system and the existing ERP systems during a transitional period.
