Siemens Software to help Establish Korean Standard for Building Information Management

The Korea Building Information Management (K-BIM) Consortium has licensed Siemens’ Parasolid® software to provide critical modeling support for a new suite of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) applications. Parasolid is one of the industry’s leading 3D geometric component technology. K-BIM, a consortium of commercial, academic and government organizations wants the new application suite to help create a national standard for building information management (BIM). This national standard will result in improved building design efficiency as well as a reduction in waste, rework, and overall cost of buildings throughout the country.

“Licensing Parasolid to provide modeling capability has accelerated our new product development and will enable us to deliver applications that compete successfully at a functional level with other AEC software suppliers,” said Jinwon Choi, CEO & Founder of Virtualbuilders, K-BIM Consortium. “Parasolid is a key component to this initiative based upon its open architecture and proven success in not only the AEC market, but also throughout the global manufacturing industry.”

BIM enables architects and engineers to manage building and construction data from conceptual design through to production, maintenance and decommissioning. Teams can participate more easily in the management of structures, whether they are designing the aesthetics of a building, configuring its internal utility systems or analyzing its structural properties. Each design and analysis process benefits from a shared, unambiguous and definitive 3D model representation that supports the rapid design and editing of models of wide-ranging size and shape, including massive structures and complex freeform geometry.

“The widespread global adoption of Parasolid coupled with its world-class modeling functionality makes it an excellent choice for the K-BIM Consortium,” said Paul Sicking, senior vice president, Chief Technology Officer, Siemens PLM Software. “Parasolid offers their end-users confidence in the accuracy and quality of their models and the ability to exchange model data seamlessly with many other software applications. This decision to license Parasolid in the Asia-Pacific region reinforces its position as a leading global contributor to successful AEC application development projects.”

Parasolid is used in Siemens' own product lifecycle management (PLM) software products including NX™ software, Solid Edge® software and 3DSync. It is licensed under an open business model by over 120 independent software vendors (ISVs), including prominent AEC companies, who develop and market more than 350 application products representing over 3.5 million active software seats. Applications developed using Parasolid are able to seamlessly exchange geometry data, providing translation-free interoperability.
