The use of plastics in manufacturing is increasingly important as product development demands across industry segments demand viable alternative materials that are durable and lightweight. In the automotive industry, earlier this year, the National Academies of Science’s National Research Council (NRC) released a report noting that lightweight plastics and plastics composites are essential to helping automotive OEMs meet stringent CAFE, standards of 54.5 mpg by 2025. Supporting that report, plastics industry representatives emphasized plastics and plastics composites, can significantly lessen the load on a vehicle’s engine, which increases mileage and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Overall, the plastics industry is the third-largest manufacturing segment in the U.S., growing at 2.3 percent per year since 1980, compared with 1.9 percent per year growth for manufacturing as a whole over that same period, according to SPI, the plastics industry trade organization.
