10:15am – 11:30am State of PLM – Today’s Market and Leading Trends
Peter Bilello, President, CIMdata
This session will review the current state of the PLM industry, with particular emphasis on trends and issues critical to suppliers of PLM technologies and services. While the world at large has not yet recovered from “The Great Recession,” PLM investments continued to increase throughout 2011 over 2010 levels. One factor is surely the broadening and deepening of PLM strategies and the associated adoption of PLM-enabling solutions. This is reflected in the theme and topics for this event. The large PLM mindshare leaders continue to broaden their portfolios, through both organic development and acquisition. Where they cannot offer solutions themselves, they are forging innovative partnerships for both products and services. Another change is the increasing emphasis on industry solutions. In 2011, several major solution suppliers reorganized to provide more focus to product development, sales, and services organizations on the needs of specific industries. One topic covered in last year’s Forum, software delivery models, has been slow to progress. Some solution suppliers have announced cloud-based offerings, but the market has yet to respond in a significant way. To date, mobile PLM applications are also mostly a technology in search of a problem. CIMdata will present its views on these trends and the impact that they have on suppliers competing in this increasingly challenging market.

Recognized for many years as the best source of comprehensive and accurate insights into the evolution and directions of the PLM industry, CIMdata's annual PLM Global Market Analysis is first presented at this Market & Industry Forum. CIMdata will present and discuss its analysis of the PLM market, including 2011 PLM market revenues and our forecasts of the future from multiple perspectives. This includes a review of industrial investments in various key PLM functional domains, major industries, and geographic regions. In particular, CIMdata provides insights into each sector and its dynamics, as well as analyzing sector revenue results for solution suppliers.

1:30pm – 2:15pm 2011 Market Analysis Results

This session will provide a look at the 2011 PLM market revenues, market growth, geographic and industry distributions and leading suppliers in Japan and Asia & pacific market including discussion and sharing the issues especially focused on Japanese market. This session also include the discussion about specific issues and characteristics (i.e., differences) to sell and use PLM in Japan including the situation of industry efforts and development status, and argue a guiding principle for the further steps with talking the impact of economic environment through past year and future.
2:15pm – 4:00pm CIMdata’s PLM Knowledge Councils Research Agenda Update
In May 2011, CIMdata acquired CPDA, helping our group achieve a long-time objective of conducting more detailed technology-focused research into problems facing companies that are pursuing PLM strategies. In this session, CIMdata will lead discussions of several topics to be covered in our complete PLM Knowledge Councils research agenda for 2012.
2:15pm – 2:50pm 2011 CAD and Analysis: Who’s on First?
Over the last several years, manufacturing companies in several industries have recognized the benefits of using simulation and analysis (S&A) methodologies and solutions earlier and earlier in the product lifecycle. Now, they are striving to apply S&A before design, using MCAD solutions. In addition, advances in direct modeling have opened up new and better interaction between design modeling and S&A that merit further exploration. This session will explore the practical implications of a simulation-driven product development process, and provide some examples of how companies are achieving this goal.
2:50pm–3:25pm Software AS the Solution
Computing devices and their related software are providing more and more of the value in the products we buy and use every day. Cars today can have dozens of embedded processors with gigabytes of software running just about every function in the car. As software becomes the solution, this has implications for configuration management and other engineering disciplines. This session will provide a forum to introduce and discuss these issues.
3:25pm – 4:00 Systems Engineering: Looking at the Whole Picture
The theme of this year’s Forum is “the whole truth.” The growing complexity of products across a broad range of industries has created a need for the application of systems engineering practices to truly understand product behavior and manage this complexity. Most of the major PLM solution suppliers have some ability to support systems engineering and requirements management but, particularly for mechanical design, skills to both implement and effectively use these practices are not widely available. CIMdata’s PLM Knowledge Councils will help document and disseminate information on solution capability and user best practices that can help address this shortage.

4:15pm - 5:15pm End–User Focused Research Topics
In 2012, our research agenda will also include several other topics of interest to manufacturing companies in multiple industries. These short sessions will highlight each of these areas, and seek inputs from the audience that will help sharpen our focus on these topics in 2012 and beyond.
4:15pm - 4:35pm State of Model-Based Systems Engineering
Systems engineering has its roots in the aerospace and defense industry, where large, complex, long-lived products were developed for delivery to (mostly) government customers. They needed ways to ensure that all of their requirements were met. The still-increasing complexity of “systems of systems” has prompted leading practitioners to develop “model-based systems engineering” that has great promise to extend current capabilities. This session will provide a brief overview of the topic and solicit inputs from the attendees to help formulate our research plans.
4:35pm - 4:55pm Process and Mechanical PLM: What Is the Right Level of Integration?
PLM arose mainly from the development of mechanically-focused products. However, companies whose products are formulated have very similar needs, i.e., to support product development across the lifecycle, and have PLM-enabling solutions that are specifically focused on formulated products. In their search for growth, many of the traditional mechanical PLM solution suppliers are either acquiring or building formulation-centric solutions. While each side has a solution, some consumer packaged goods companies have the need to synchronously manage mechanical and process products that have complex interactions. This session will explore the necessary level of integration to effectively support that class of problems.
4:55pm - 5:15pm Social Computing and PLM
With millions of users around the world, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and other technologies have changed the way people use computing technology in all walks of life. Some companies see the energy expended using social computing technologies and want to leverage that kind of passion for the benefit of the company. PLM solution suppliers also want to tap into this trend to better support product development across the lifecycle. This session will provide an overview of the topic, and seek to get inputs on what types of research might enhance broad-based adoption of such technologies as part of PLM strategies.
