Australian-based IC3D has released a new version of translationXPERT, the rapid language translation software it developed for SolidWorks. Distributed nationally in Australia and New Zealand by IC3D sister company Intercad – the largest SolidWorks distributor in the region – translationXPERT 2.0 revolutionises the way designers collaborate with colleagues and other designers around the world in their native languages. New functionality in translationXPERT 2.0 means any SolidWorks drawing (including DWG imports) can now be automatically translated and output as a foreign-language PDF document. MSC Software Corporation today announced that researchers at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (one of the public institute in astrophysics of the French National Center for Scientific Research) are using MSC Software's Marc Nonlinear FEA software to simulate a new process that involves the use of hydroforming to reach extreme optical mirror shapes, necessary for the next generation of astronomical telescopes and instruments, and to reduce the cost and lead time of producing freeform mirrors. "We selected Marc to analyze the hydroforming process because the software has demonstrated the ability to provide accurate results in problems involving complex nonlinear changes in geometry and materials properties," said Zalpha Challita, in post-doctoral position at CNRS-LAM. ModuleWorks’ development team has been working hard to add support for barrel mill cutters to their 5-Axis machining strategies. Recent testing has shown the benefits of this as part of the main 5-Axis component and also in the MultiBlade application. Barrel mill cutters are not new but they have not been commonly used in 5-Axis applications until recently. Their unique geometry form has a number of benefits in the machining process. The effective radius of engagement is larger than a standard cutter form and this will result in smaller cusps between passes leading to better surface finish. Larger step over values can be used and this results in shorter machining times. The ModuleWorks 5-Axis component allows barrel mill tools to be used with all of the existing machining strategies.
