Altair and AVL today announced a tighter integration between Altair OptiStruct®, an award-winning finite element analysis (FEA) solver that is part of the Altair HyperWorks® computer-aided engineering (CAE) suite, and AVL EXCITE, the market-leading simulation environment for dynamics and acoustics of powertrain systems.  The fast and accurate coupling between OptiStruct and AVL EXCITE shortens the associated workflow, reduces error, and improves the robustness of engine dynamics analyses. The AVL EXCITE product family is a powertrain-oriented rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic analysis solution which provides advanced techniques to calculate the dynamics, strengths, vibration, and acoustics of combustion engines, transmissions, and conventional or electrified powertrains and drivelines.  Outstanding models of lubricated contacts (slider bearings, piston and piston rings) facilitate detailed investigations of the contact behavior, including the prediction of friction and wear. Customers use Altair OptiStruct for structural and NVH analysis as well as to efficiently create flex bodies for engine dynamics analysis.  With this development, Altair OptiStruct

MSC Software today announced the acquisition of Simufact Engineering. Simufact is a leader in simulation of metal forming and joining processes. Based on best-in-class nonlinear simulation software technology, Simufact.forming and Simufact.welding are metal forming and welding process simulation tools used by aerospace, automotive, and machinery industries, their parts and materials suppliers, as well as major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to realize significant savings from reducing shop-floor tryouts of their manufacturing processes. Simufact's customers in the metal forming industry that leverage process simulation confirm that they have reduced physical testing up to 50% following implementation of Simufact's software. Moreover, they confirm that cycle times for new part developments can be reduced from 3 weeks to 1 week. MSC customers will realize even greater savings from simulating the entire process chain with Simufact and MSC's tools, to gain a better understanding of the as-manufactured condition of the product. "Too often, our customers tell me that poorly-understood manufacturing processes result in

PLM’s future is its platformization. This isn’t a revolution. It is an evolution. It will take years, commitment, and patience from industrial companies and the solution providers that support them. Today, many leading PLM solution providers are developing highly integrated platforms as constructs of application delivery solutions. From these open and highly accessible platforms, users will be able to assemble the processes and workflows of ideation and product development—the building blocks of innovation—and re-assemble and reconfigure them whenever they need. Assembling and reassembling has always been done, of course, but today’s product developers work with a kaleidoscope of rapidly evolving tools, systems, and strategies. Moreover, the task of assembling and reassembling building blocks gets bigger every year. In many ways, PLM platformization is a re-architecting of software-based solution suites and the links between them. It speeds up business processes, refocuses and sharpens business strategies, and leverages innovation with agility. Peering deeply
