From the 3D Printer into Space

Altair announced today that RUAG Space, with the support of Altair ProductDesign, has built a redesigned, optimized antenna support for an Earth observation satellite, to be produced using industrial additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. The objective was to create an aluminum component that would be significantly stiffer while at the same time lighter, taking full advantage of the design freedom afforded by 3D printing. To redesign and optimize the antenna, engineers used Altair HyperWorks® solver OptiStruct®, guaranteeing a load-sufficient material distribution. For the design, engineers used solidThinking Evolve®. Design freeze was reached after only four weeks. The component was then manufactured with a 3D printer, with no need of further design adjustments. Using topology optimization in conjunction with additive manufacturing, the team achieved elite weight and stiffness performance characteristics not possible using conventional analysis and manufacturing techniques. EOS, the German market leader in the area of industrial 3D printing, contributed its additive

Delcam will demonstrate its full range of CAM software at the Metalex exhibition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 20th to 23rd November.  The latest releases on show will include the 2015 versions of the PowerMILL CAM system for high-speed and five-axis machining, the FeatureCAM feature-based programming software and the PowerMILL Robot software for the programming of machining with robots.  The new release of PowerMILL, Delcam’s programming system for high-speed and five-axis machining, includes improvements to the Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy, expanded collision checking to also cover near misses, and more efficient raster finishing. Vortex produces safe toolpaths with a much deeper cut by using a controlled engagement angle that maintains the optimum cutting conditions for the whole toolpath.  As a result, higher feed rates and material-removal rates are possible, making the cutting time shorter by as much as 70%.  Enhancements in PowerMILL 2015 will give even greater reductions in machining

Vero Software have provided 20 seats of each of their leading VISI and Edgecam brands, to the AMRC Training Centre, which has been officially opened by HRH The Duke of York, KG. The facility is part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing, and was set up with European funding to provide training for manufacturing-focused apprentices in machining, software, maintenance, welding, business administration and robotics. Youngsters accepted for apprenticeships by the centre are then invited to job interviews with registered employers. Engineering trainer Mick Fairman says: “They all have jobs when they start their courses with us. We currently have around 100 apprentices at the centre full-time working towards NVQ Level 2 and BTEC Level 3.” Opening the centre, Prince Andrew spoke passionately about how important apprentices are to the future of the UK’s manufacturing industry...a point echoed by Mick Fairman: “We tailor our courses to ensure the

Traditional Product Lifecycle Management solutions have a very limited definition of product lifecycle – starting too late and finishing too early. They leave the crucial phase of innovation management to “blood, sweat and Excel”, and pass off the commercialization phase to separate manufacturing and master data management (MDM) solutions. The result is unmanaged processes, disparate information silos, and ad hoc decision making. This results in challenges in meeting critical customer requirements or promised market expectations. For customers who want these capabilities on the cloud the situation is even more challenging. To address these challenges, Oracle has added Oracle Innovation Management Cloud and Oracle Product Development Cloud to the existing Oracle Product Hub Cloud to create a comprehensive Oracle Product Value Chain Cloud solution – from ideation to commercialization. The Oracle Product Value Chain (PVC) Cloud provides a single integrated product record across all three parts of the product lifecycle: Innovation, Development and Commercialization. These solutions enable
