Dassault Systèmes and Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Metz (ENIM) today announced that ENIM and 15 other universities in ten countries around the world provide their engineering students with a unique social innovation and collaborative learning experience, based on Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The pioneering “Global Factory” program, now preparing for its third year, brought together engineering students from a total of 16 different universities in seven different time zones, some 11 hours apart, by leveraging the multidisciplinary 3DEXPERIENCE platform from Dassault Systèmes.  All participants use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and cloud technology for design authoring, digital manufacturingU, scientific simulation and analysis, as well as collaboration. The outcome of this program is a rich computer model of a complete automobile factory, optimized in multiple aspects, including building, floor layout, process definitions, throughput, robots and machine programs, operator ergonomics, and complex systems. CONTACT Software, who co-authored the "Code of PLM Openness", is now involved in a further important initiative for open systems in the field of product lifecycle management. Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) is an organization that uses established Web technology as the basis for developing standards for integrating proprietary software and product lifecycle tools and the associated data and workflows with the aim of achieving end-to-end lifecycle processes. Standards like this open up application scenarios in which product information that is distributed over different IT solutions can be explicitly linked and used across system boundaries. This facilitates collaboration in interdisciplinary project teams, since it is no longer the case that joint development tasks will always result in the need to exchange data. And for companies, the outlay involved in implementing and maintaining a whole range of point-to-point interfaces is also reduced. The software landscape in product development is one of the

Edgecam have set up a structured training course for carbide cutting tool manufacturer Seco. Consisting of classroom-style training, Edgecam’s course was designed to provide Seco’s Technical Centre Customer Project Engineers with specific knowledge of basic milling, turning and Part Modeler. Edgecam Strategic Partnership Manager Wesley Tonks says: “They are now using the knowledge they’ve gained through this training, to program more efficiently and effectively using Edgecam on in-house customer projects. Seco and Edgecam already had what the software’s describes as a technical collaborative partnership, and Wesley Tonks says the training reinforces the message of being total solution providers. “Seco are advising customers not only about the best carbide cutting tools that are right for a particular project, but they are now in a more authoritative position to offer programming advice when visiting customers.          He says that training, overall, is becoming more vital across the manufacturing industry to compensate for a declining skill base.

CAM software developer Delcam, cutting tool manufacturer SGS, and machine tool supplier DMG Mori will present two joint seminars on high-efficiency machining at SGS’s recently-opened UK headquarters in Wokingham, near Reading, on Wednesday 2nd July.  Morning and afternoon sessions will be presented during which the three companies will describe their latest developments to increase machine-tool productivity.  Each set of presentations will followed by live demonstrations of Delcam’s award-winning Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy on DMG Mori machine tools using SGS cutters. The Vortex strategy, which was recently announced to be the Best CADCAM or Control System at the MWP Awards, offers substantial time savings by allowing deeper cuts to be made using the full flute length of solid carbide tools as the cutting surface.  A series of trials run by Delcam, on different machine tools within its Advanced Manufacturing Facility fitted with SGS tooling, has shown that time savings of up to
