PDF Key takeaways: The increasing volume of simulation data is overwhelming analysts’ capacity to find the useful information contained within it. Simulation analytics refers to both the process and the tools for extracting useful information from large amounts of simulation data. Simulation analytics can be applied to enrich information and reduce the volume of data, to compute simulation metrics, and to enable important data to be retained and archived. CIMdata is tracking the development and adoption of several promising new Simulation Analytics applications; we consider Tecplot Chorus to be noteworthy. As companies move to digital product development, the role of simulation (computer–aided engineering) rises in importance. Indeed, with the shift to model–based and simulation–driven design, the role of simulation is evolving rapidly. Leading users now leverage simulation to help create product concepts—to optimize designs to best meet competing or conflicting requirements and to create robust designs whose performance is less sensitive to variations in manufacturing processes

PDF Key takeaways: Three major technology-driven themes–the consumerization of IT, the availability of information-on mobile delivery devices, and the social media-savvy workforce–are converging and changing the face of collaboration. This convergence is forcing companies to implement new PLM-related business processes and technologies that allow and enable social business collaboration. Nuage is taking an exceptional approach by offering an online business application suite for social business collaboration that provides users the flexibility and interactivity often lacking in today’s traditional data management solutions. The Future is Upon Us Ready or not, here they come. This is the soft rumble that is reverberating throughout much of the corporate world. The social media-savvy workforce is upon us, but is the corporate world ready for this new wave of workers who expect instant download of applications and data with little or no training necessary; where everything is accessible via the Internet and over their mobile devices; where they are always connected

PDF Key takeaways: A revolution is underway throughout much of the architecture, engineering, and construction industry that requires today’s building products manufacturers and fabricators to adopt a new way of working. Building information modeling (BIM) is playing a major role in this revolution. Autodesk is well positioned to support both the product development and BIM needs of building products manufacturers and fabricators of all types and sizes. The BIM Revolution A revolution is underway throughout the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Many industry leaders are promoting and nurturing a shift from building to assembling. This is a fundamental shift from a business-operating model where everything is unique to a paradigm where much is repeatable and off the shelf. One in which building products are pre-packaged and assembled rather than being designed, manufactured, delivered, and installed for a single use. In this new paradigm, Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a core role in the development, execution,

PDF On June 5 and 6 Dassault Systèmes held their annual Industry Analyst event at their Velizy headquarters just outside of Paris. Day one focused on Dassault Systèmes—the company, and day two covered eight of their twelve targeted industrial vertical markets. This session provided some needed clarity on their recent changes in messaging, brand focus, and acquisitions. The attendee list included the usual industry analysts, but there have been some changes over the years as Dassault Systèmes has expanded their vision. This is reflected in how Dassault Systèmes defines the relevant analyst community, and there were some new faces in the crowd, including analysts covering virtual worlds, serious games, and financial services. Day one started with a passionate presentation by Dassault Systèmes President and CEO Bernard Charlès. Dassault Systèmes tends to refer to their company’s evolution as a series of historical epochs around their key offerings: DS1 for 3D modeling, DS2 for

PlanetPTC Live 2012 (Commentary)

PDF CIMdata recently attended PlanetPTC Live 2012 in Orlando, Florida. PlanetPTC Live gives PTC customers the opportunity to showcase their work, network with peers, share ideas, and discuss how they are addressing their challenges. PTC reported that over 1,200 attendees were present at the event. A major theme for PlanetPTC Live was that inspiration is the spark that drives innovation and fuels the technology breakthroughs that help transform great ideas into great products. Several PTC customers shared their stories of how inspiration can impact the world around us. PTC President and CEO Jim Hepplemann opened the annual end-user conference, repeating the bold statement recently published by The Economist magazine that the world is entering into a “third industrial revolution.” Mr. Hepplemann noted that the new era is defined by the transformation of global manufacturing in the digital world, and the leveraging of technologies and the process changes that technology enables. According to

PDF Food and beverage industry customers demand a continually expanding variety of healthy, high quality products at continuously lower prices. At the same time, food and beverage companies want to expand their markets and sell the same or similar formulas and products in multiple geographic regions. This requires understanding the local culture, tastes, available raw materials and ingredients, and importantly, local regulatory requirements. Perhaps the most difficult issues to address are those related to regulations. Regulatory requirements vary by region and by product and are becoming increasingly complex and difficult to support. Each region and/or product normally requires different packaging, labeling, and reporting. As discussed in the CIMdata white paper, Delivering PLM Technology to Solve Food & Beverage Industry Issues: Infor Optiva, published in May 2012, regulatory issues primarily fall into two categories: food safety, where the product may be physically harmful; and labeling, for which completeness and accuracy are extremely important.

PDF Automotive industry manufacturers are well known for the adversities they face in the design and production of competitive products in their volatile consumer markets. They have, however, become known as leaders in innovative new product development. In particular, automotive OEMs set a forward looking example of excellence often emulated in other industries. The challenges the automotive sector confronts entail: Visual appeal with demands on mathematical, aerodynamic, and aesthetic disciplines Responding to increasing customer demands for personalization of “their” vehicle Product innovation and complexity across mechatronics systems of mechanical, electrical, and embedded software solutions Reducing cost through virtual simulation in numerous domains of structural, thermal, fluid dynamics, and injection molding Improved collaborative design, decision making and product visualization across the supply value chain Manufacturing agility with asset management, production layout and optimization As a leading technology solution provider to product development companies, Autodesk has expanded their presence in the automotive industry based on growth through product enhancements and

PDF LMS International held its 2012 European Vehicle Conference on April 18–19 in Munich, Germany. LMS is an engineering services and software company, headquartered in Leuven, Belgium. They are a partner for companies in the automotive, aerospace and other advanced manufacturing industries. They offer a combination of 1D and 3D virtual simulation software, testing systems, and engineering services. This LMS event is a technical conference, aimed at the vehicle engineering community, particularly LMS’ customers. Nearly 300 attendees represented 115 companies, and 44 papers were presented. The theme of the conference was “frontloading of vehicle systems engineering as a way to deliver superior brand performance.” Industrial keynote speakers included Dr. Guglielmo Caviasso (Fiat), Dr. Christof Weber (Daimler) and Mr. Ryusaka Sawada (Toyota). LMS is a leading proponent of Model–Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and they are possibly unique in that they stress the importance of including physics–based models of mechanical systems in their analyses.
